    Hello friends,
Everything has gone relatively well since you last helped me, and I then ran a couple of the spy and ads removers. I run Adaware and Spybot regularly (I just did) and have not had any problems - that was, until yesterday.

Now I get a pop-up every few minutes advertising something, even if I am not on the internet. I searched for recently loaded *.exe files, and there were none. There are new files of other types, but I can't really tell. The tasks that are running are OK, and Spybot and Adaware do not find anything.

I just ran HijackThis, and hope that perhaps you can tell me what the problem is? Thanks in advance.

Download HijackThis.exe Version 1.99.1 from here, and overwrite the one you currently have, then post a new log.

    Thanks Dave,
Here it is, below, but first a simple question: I can afford to contribute to the site from where I downloaded the new hijackthis, or to WindowsBBS - where does it do more good? Here, I guess?

    1st Edit to add:
Somehow, I have not had a pop-up for about 15 minutes (since I started working on your recommendation) but they had been poping up every 20 or 30 seconds just earlier this evening - go figure!
    2nd Edit to Correct above:
Nope. Pop-ups are still coming - false 'calm' once in a while.

Actually, the frequency of these pop ups are making this PC rather useless -

As would be true of anyone...

    They are driving me nuts!

    Edited to add:
I loaded the new version of Spyware Blaster, but the pop-ups continue.
I have had to close two pop-ups just while I write this!

Scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following entries. Close ALL other windows and click fix.

You will need to turn off system restore.

Go to start>run and type msconfig, hit enter. On the General tab click the advanced button. Check the box to 'enable start menu' and OK out. Restart and choose safe mode.

Now in safe mode, you will need to show hidden files and folders, as well as system files and extensions for known file types.

Open C:\WINDOWS and delete the folder EliteToolBar.
Open C:\WINDOWS\system and delete the file ELITEONM32.EXE.
Open C:\Temp if present, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\temp, select all and delete. Do this for all usernames.
Open the control panel, then internet options and delete the temporary internet files, checking the box for offline content.
Open My Computer, right click Local disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes and click OK.
Uncheck the box to 'enable start menu' in msconfig and OK out. Reboot.

Upon reboot you will be greeted with a message window from the System Configuration Utility. Check the box not to use and don't show, then click OK.

Run another HijackThis scan and post the log.

    OK, I did everything except,

NOT DONE: "You will need to turn off system restore." Or did the subsequent steps take care of this?
NOT FOUND: "Open C:\WINDOWS and delete the folder EliteToolBar. "
NOT PRESENT: "Open C:\Temp if present, select all and delete. "
NOT FOUND(!): "Open C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\temp, select all and delete. Do this for all usernames. "
NOT ASKED: "Upon reboot you will be greeted with a message window from the System Configuration Utility. Check the box not to use and don't show, then click OK. "

OK: Run another HijackThis scan and post the log.

Well, no pop-ups so far - keep my fingers crossed, or something else to fix?

    Thanks a million!

The system restore should be toggled off and back on after reboot to clear restore points of infected files.

The Local Settings folder is a hidden folder. Did you click the link to see how to show hidden files/folders?

Your log looks clean. :) After toggling system restore, a few recommendations...... Do you have Spybot Version 1.3? If not, download it from my signature and install. Allow it to load SD Helper. Open it up and click mode on the toolbar, then advanced mode. Click immunize in the left pane, then immunize again, this time from above with the green + beside it (always recheck this setting after downloading updates). Click the link below that for SpywareBlaster, download, install, enable all protection and update. Check for updates regularly and watch for any protection being disabled. Then, still in Spybot, click tools button, then IE tweaks and at least lock the HOSTS file.
Then download IESpyad.exe, double click to extract (it extracts to C:\IESpyad by default), open the folder, double click the ie-ads.reg file and allow it to merge into the registry.

That will give you some added layers of protection against unwanted parasites.

    Happy to help. :)

    Dave,
    • I don't believe I know how to do the restore toggle, or if I togggled it, I did not know it.

    • Yes, I clicked to view the hidden folders and files. Actually, that's the way I always have it set. I will post the directory tree when I get home later today.

    • Yes, I downloaded the SpyBot V3.1 when this problem started a couple of days ago, but it didn't help back then.

    • But I had not done your other recommendations. I will.

    • I just became a member as well. The help here is invaluable.

    Thanks.

    Thanks Dave,
    • Since everything seems to be working fine and the log is clean, do you see a need to repeat the steps with the restore disabled now that I learned how to do it?
    • Here is the Root Tree at C:\ - not quite as it is in my other PC's...

No need to repeat any steps.

I must be losing it. Could have sworn I followed a C:\Documents and Settings path on an ME machine at work, but your machine obviously doesn't have that folder and I can't find any reference to any other ME machines having it through searching. Sorry to have you looking for it. :(

Looks like you're good to go. :)
