If possible can someone explain this networking puzzle to me

A desktop computer running windows 98 was attached to a wireless router which had a connected dsl connection
The router was connected to the dsl isp
The internet was totally connected and working with a laptop running windows 2000. It was verified to be connected to that wireless router with no other wireless signals detected what so ever
The windows 98 computer would not receive internet , but easily connected to the control panel of the router
    No internet
The dns in the tcip of the windows 98 computer was turned on and off repeatedly
The windows 98 computer worked fine on another router , which was on a cable dsl. There was spyware which was cleaned out.
Connected fine with working internet on the cable isp
Taken back to dsl router number one
Setting changed. The correct dns servers from the dsl isp in the router were grabbed automatically in the settings of the router , both automatically and then added manually
A second router of the same model ( gigafast) was tried with same result of no working internet
Another brand and model router was tried and the windows 98 computer worked fine and was connected on the internet
There was no other apparent wireless signal to the laptop
The encryption was on , and the laptop was verified to be connected to wireless router number 1 ( and three as well)

any ideas as to an explanation ??

    thank you

DSL modem should be put into Bridge Mode.

Router should be set to PPPoE and handle all DHCP for the lan.

Win98 setings for TCP/IP when using a router:

    1. IP Address Tab: set to obtain an ip address automatically.
    2. Gateway Tab: use lan ip of router (ex. 192.168.1.1)
    3. Wins Config Tab: disable wins resolution.
    4. DNS Config Tab: enable DNS, use lan ip of router (ex. 192.168.1.1)
    5. Must reboot the win98 comp for settings to take effect.

I thought I would be the only one on planet earth to encounter what you described.....needed my netgear 311 wireless card to fix another machine..used a D-Link 530tx card in it's place and dropped a cable to it.....finished what i was doing, put the Netgear card back in.....no internet, could connect to the router, but no internet......went into device manager, disabled the D-Link card and bingo....IE redetected proxy and everything worked....but I don't know why....even did the Ip release thing...hoping I can learn something here

As I recall a 98 machine infested with spyware required a file called LSP fix to repair. It's been atleast 5 years since I touched a 98 machine.

the router was set on defaults with a standard PPPOE logon
My belief was that the main issues ( at least with tech support calls ) were that ip and dns were set to automatic
I am a bit confused as to the dns setting
There is a setting to turn on dns and add an arbitrary name ( at least in this case)
I have had occasions where on the same windows 98 computer attached by wireless that the internet browser stopped receiving until i changed this setting
I had occasions where the same machine that worked before had to be set the other way in order for the same computer with the same router and networking setup to work
Could anyone please explain this to me

    thank you

On Windows 98 you should manually set the DNS server. Let the router handle the DNS rather than the comp:
DNS Config Tab: enable DNS, use lan ip of router (ex. 192.168.1.1)

NT systems you can use manual DNS or Automatic, either will work OK. Win2K and above systems have a DNS Service.

For mobile wifi laptops it's best to use Automatic because may connect to different wlans, and using the ISP DNS is usually fastest browsing.

DNS queries get cached in win2k and above systems. Failed requests also get cached. One can disable caching of failed DNS requests though:
Adjust Windows XP DNS Cache Settings

Windows 98 SE does not provide support for manually flushing the DNS
cache. (Windows 2000 and XP ipconfig /flushdns). In Windows 98 SE, the only simple manual method to flushing the DNS cache is to reboot, or:
How Internet Explorer uses the cache for DNS host entries
