A very strange thing is happening (among others ) ; I am Running vista Ult ; OEM ; I will give more detailed system information if necessary ; suddenly after a Breakdown of My FAI (Orange ) and the problem supposedly repaired , the icon next to he clock showing the connection satus is redcrossed and transparency tells me the status is "unknown " and the server could not connect ; what is happening here ? of course I am connected and I can see the network in "Connections and SHARING center " while slow to appear ; there the signal seems excellent (wifi of course ) ; this never happened formerly : I was always allowed to connect from this icon ; moreover windows "does not see any problem with my connection; what is happening here I do not know . Somebody has an idea ? Thanks OLIVIER GEBUHRER (registry scan is OK )

    Hi Olivier,

I don't know much about your machine, but I would guess that the icon you are seeing in the taskbar is for the ethernet connection on the machine, not for the wifi connection. Try disabling the unused network adapter (card?) you probably have.

    Roger

ps. Most people using this site would use ISP not FAI (Internet Services Provider)

    More Complete Description

No , it's NOT the ethernet connnection ; see below a more complete description of what's happening

I got suddenly the following problem :
first of all , while my internet wifi connection works , the icon near the clock showing the connection status is redcrossed ; pointing at it tells me that the "server was unable to start" ; for a related reason I presume , no way to access network and sharing center ; page is blank and I am told that windows explorer stopped working ; finally no eventlog is available ; I am told that the service could not start ; anything in the device manager seems OK , no ? anywhere or ! ; anybody knows what's happening there ? Thanks OLIVIER GEBUHRER
Short PC description : ASUS VX2S 3 months old; running Vista ultimate ; 2GB RAo know More if anybody wants to know .

    Hi Olivier,

Some computers show 2 identical icons for the web, one for the NIC and one of WIFI. In your case the NIC connection is unused and so X'd out as r.leale said. I any case, don't worry about it. If you have other problems, suggest you run an online antivirus scan and check your security against the recommendations on our security forum.

Sorry, This Is Not The Right Answer

I would like first to thank both of you for taking the pain of answering ; unfortunately persisting in a wrong explanation does not solve anything; I am well aware of the possibility of two icons showing the status of internet connection ; this in particular is the case if you use XP ; in Vista things are different because , in principle by clicking right or directly on the icon you get access to the description of ALL available networks where you might or not connect to ; network and sharing center is also available to that effect; none of them are available here :
"for a related reason I presume , no way to access network and sharing center ; page is blank and I am told that windows explorer stopped working ; finally no eventlog is available ; I am told that the service could not start "

And of course , antivirus is working and a deep scan performed showed no infection .
PS beeing french, it may happen that my english is a little broken ,for those who are speaking native english , they should try in french just to get an idea ; in particular acronyms .....

Something happened to your computer's web connection, which was apparently not completely repaired. Your operating system has been damaged. Not knowing your security, I suggested you view our forum on the subject and possibly post your problem there. It may be necessary to re-install Ultimate, but you should be sure to follow the advice of the experts on that forum to avoid a recurrence of the problem. Generally, it's suggested that you clean your computer as best you can before posting a highjack this log, and one of the first steps in that is an online antivirus scan such as trend or kaspersky because something may have slipped by your antivirus program.

many thanks again for your attention ; apparently , the problem has something to do with the wifi card (my guess ) the PC (laptop) is under warranty so I asked for a RMA ; I fear they will reinstall Vista without asking me first; anyway ... the problem has apparently nothing to do with security ; Bit DEFENDER sec Suite 2008 is installed and working well ; regular scans identifyou nothing no Spyware or such through A2 -Square ; ipsec Diagnostic tool from Microsoft indicates that there is a problem with the wifi (internal card) ; however, I fear the operation uninstalling and reinstalling the driver; if I uninstall and the problem is hardware then most probably reinstalling it will not solve the problem but may lose any Internet connection which actually still works (!!!)
