    I'm trying to help another friend with their PC problems. They have Spybot, Adaware and AVG, all up to date and scan clean. They are complaining about the PC being very sluggish on the net and even freezing up completely after being online for a while. They are using AOL with dialup. I've run HJT and I'm posting the log in hopes that someone sees something the other programs didn't;

Add/remove programs and uninstall P2P Networking and any item that shows as Kazaa anything

Windows Explorer and delete any that still exist
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipxnic.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\P2P Networking (folder with any contents
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\htmbin.dll

An online virus scan would be a good idea and unless you personally have verified that their anti-spyware software is current versions (Ad-Aware SE and Spybot 1.3 with very recent updates) then take a look there as well.

    Found the problem, Bill.
Sorry Bill, I couldn't resist that opportunity. :D You're a good friend to be helping others clean up their comps. ;)

Seriously now, when uninstalling P2PNetworking, if/when asked whether you also want to remove Altnet components, say 'Yes'.

    Hi Newt,

Thanks for the reply. I followed your suggestions, the only thing that I could find related to Kazaa was media desktop, but it would not uninstall through add/remove programs. I ran Kazaabegone and it said all references to Kazaa had been removed. P2P has been uninstalled as well. I did verify Spybot, Adaware and AVG and made sure all were up to date with current defs and releases. Here is a new HJT log, let me know if you see anything else that needs attention.

    Thanks,

    Bill

    Hi Dave,

I agree, using AOL is their biggest problem. The funny thing is they had cable internet and kept getting clobbered with spyware so they got rid of it and went back to AOL. I tried to recommend ways to keep the spyware/viruses to a minimum with cable internet (firewall router, firewall software, anti-virus software, spybot, adaware, spyware blaster, etc.) but to no avail.

The P2P uninstall didn't ask anything about altnet, it did display a list of possible things that wouldn't work properly if I removed it, like Kazaa.

I don't mind helping others out cleaning up this kind of mess. It's a learning experience for both me and them. It's amazing how many people call me about their PC running slow or they can't get online anymore. When I ask about spyware/antivirus software, firewalls, etc. most of them either don't have it or have it and don't realize they have to keep it up to date and do periodic scans for it to be effective. What's more amazing is getting repeat calls from the same people after I go through this once with them.

    Hi Bill,

Ever thought about having any of those friends take a look here at what you sometimes go through getting them cleaned up? Maybe they would appreciate it a bit more and at least attempt to keep their PCs clean. Should that fail, there's always the almighty dollar. People tend to put forth a bit more effort if they know it's going to cost them not to. ;)

Bill - Dave makes a sad-but-true point. Folks will give more attention & weight to what you recommend if they have to pay for the cleaning and advice.

I know you do this because you enjoy it but you might be doing them a favor if you charged some nominal amount for a cleaning. $10 would be enough to get their attention but not enough to break the bank for anyone.

    Hi Dave & Newt,

I have directed some of the more PC savy folks I've dealt with to this site for help, when they want to try it themselves. Most of the ones I get calls from tend to get the 'deer in the headlights' look when I try to explain what's wrong with the PC and how it gets that way.

Truthfully, I have been charging lately for repeat offenders. I figure it's only fair since it's my time and I have already given them the tools and usually written directions on how not to get in bad shape again. I usually don't charge much, way short of what local shops here do for the same thing, but I hope it will make them think twice about letting it get in bad shape again. For some though, it doesn't seem to matter.

Have you guys had a look at the last HJT log I posted? Is it good to go now? I haven't tried to get online again with it yet, will try tonight when I get home.

Thanks to both of you again for your help.

    Bill

This is what I would fix, Bill.

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://qus7.hpwis.com/
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-qus7.hpwis.com/
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://channels.aimtoday.com/search/aimtoolbar.jsp
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,First Home Page = C:\Program Files\AOL Toolbar\welcome.html
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {40D41A8B-D79B-43d7-99A7-9EE0F344C385} - (no file)
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
    O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe

Then make sure msmsgs.exe is not running and uninstall Windows Messenger.

You already know the drill with Spybot, SpywareBlaster and IESpyad.

    Hi Dave,

I'll fix the things you recommended. The link you posted for windows messenger doesn't work. I saved this from an earlier thread that you helped me with, is this the uninstall you were talking about?

    RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

I think I did this the last time I had this machine. I don't see msmsgs.exe in the running process list.

    Dave - info please.

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://qus7.hpwis.com/
for me, the link does a redirect to http://compaq.my.yahoo.com/

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-qus7.hpwis.com/
to http://www.overture.com/d/search/p/hp/overpanel/?Partner=hp_overpanel_qus7 (Overture Search - which looks legit)

And the other one looks like a legit search site as well. Now allowing for the fact that those are not what I would pick for R0/R1 entries, I can imagine the user might and they seem harmless enough. Just wondering why you want to whack them.

Same question about the "AOL Toolbar" he has stored locally.

That's the command Bill. Had that been done already, I suppose it's possible that the run entry is just a leftover.

Newt, you know me, I don't like hijacks of any kind. Not that they're necessarily bad ones, but hijacks none the less. I only stated, those are what I would fix. LOL Those weren't put there by the user, but by HP and AOL. Based on what Bill has mentioned about the user's technical know-how, they probably won't even notice a difference.

    Dave & Newt,

I fixed the entries that were suggested, like you said Dave, they probably won't know the difference anyway. The messenger entries I think were just left overs, I can't see that it is running at all. I've been online with the PC, done email, surfed and checked for updates for the spyware and antivirus software and haven't had any problems with it. I think all is well again, for how long I'm not sure. I just had this same PC 3 months ago for the same thing.

Thanks again guys for all your help, I really appreciate it. It's been superb as usual.

    Bill
