    1. i attempted to run system restore, and after it finished it came up with an error message saying it could not complete system restore for some reason. i checked the help menu and it said that if there's a chance of a virus (which was the reason i ran system restore) in one of the dates in which you wanted to restore, then you should turn off sytem restore and delete the restore dates. i followed the help menu directions and now i think i made a mistake. is there any way to undo the deletion of those restore dates?

    2. if i can't get those dates back, is there any other way to reset my computer to the way it was when i first got it?

what i would ultimately like to do is save my important files to a memory stick and then start anew. i would like to have my computer exactly the way it was when i first started it up, straight from the manufacturer. the reason i want to do this is i've somehow contracted a very persistent version of spyware/adware that has popup advertisements for WinAntiVirus, WinFixer, and a few others. i figure if i started from scratch on my computer, it would get rid of this spyware/adware. any advice?

    Hello soccergirl9,
    welcome to Windows BBS ... :) ... !

We need more information on the computer, manufacturer, model and if a Windows XP CD or Recovery CD(s) were supplied.

    A few quick answers:

    1) If SR has been turned off, there is no way of getting any restore points back.

(Sadly, SR does not work as well as advertised. The instructions are vague and as you have noticed, may be incorrect. I have attempted to use SR on three occasions, all of them unsuccessful. Luckily, I used Norton Ghost to backup the system partition and another backup application to backup user data to a different hard disk. After the third strike, SR was out and I disabled it.)

    2) That depends on which CD(s) were supplied with the computer.

    3) If it is a desktop, it would be possible to remove the hard disk and to install it as slave in another computer to get your personal data transfered. When finished, put it back and start over from square one.
