My toolbar on Netscape 7 shows icons for sites that do not show up in my Personal Toolbar folder in Bookmarks - or in any other folder, for that matter. I want to delete most of those icons, but I can't.

The items in my Bookmarks Personal Toolbar folder do not show up on my toolbar - and I can't get them to.

At one point I somehow lost (can't remember what I did) all my bookmarks, and I imported an old set from a folder on my desktop. Someone told me I might be able to find the bookmarks I lost in hidden files and that that would probably solve my toolbar problem, as well. Would that be a good idea?

Between a new computer, new OS, and new version of Netscape, I'm having all sorts of troubles. Can someone help me with this one, please?

I've remembered how I lost my bookmarks, in case it's relevant. I deleted a profile, and now I can't get it back. Not too bright, I know, but I'm workin' on it.

Did you use PROFILE MANAGER to delete profile ?

Did you delete ALL files when you deleted the profile?

Have you emptied Recycle Bin ?

Select "Show All Files" - Do a "File Find" and search for "BOOKMARKS.HTML "

If they are still around, this should find them. Then we can figure out how to get them back.....

(this is only my opinion and I may be wrong)

    Regards

captjlddavis - hi, and thank you for responding. (Capt in the air force?)

    Yes, I used Profile Manager.
Yes, I'm afraid I deleted all files.
Yes, I've emptied my recycle bin since then.
And I have searched for all Bookmarks. HTML and havent' seen them.
Guess I'm up the creek, right?

But does this explain why my tool bar shows icons from the original installation of Netscp 7 and why I can't delete them?

And does it explain why my Personal Toolbar folder shows Google, for instance, when I can't make it show up on the toolbar???

    Right......(on that score)

    On to next part:

What is showing on the "Toolbar "

Did you check Edit-> Preference->Navigator ? and uncheck Items that you do not want on the tool bar ? (Bottom Right Side of Page)

When you Go to Bookmarks -> Manage Bookmarks -> View, Did you "Set As Personal Toolbar Folder" to the folder that you want .

Hang in there, if I am on the wrong tack, perhaps someone will jump in and set BOTH of us straight......

    Regards

My toolbar shows Mail, AIM, Home, Radio, My Netscape, Shop, and Bookmarks.

My Personal Toolbar folder shows Ask Jeeves, Google, and Windowsbbs, which is what I want.

And neither the twain shall meet!

Yes, I've checked Netscape Preferences: It shows Bookmarks, Home, Print, and Mail checked.

In Bookmarks, Manage Bookmarks, View, it doesn't seem to make any difference whether I check "Set as Personal Toolbar Folder" or not. Nothing happens there.

Thanks for trying to help; it's really confusing, isn't it?

    Hi aks,

Have you opened all the folders in your Bookmark view. I've had items move from one folder to another. Never been able to figure it out why. If you find it in sitting in another folder, delete the item. Good luck.

    Hi aks,

I had a similar problem once, after importing bookmarks If I remember right, I had to create a new folder, named it Personal Toolbar, then placed in there the shortcuts I wanted. Then I think I closed and reopened the Manage Bookmarks window, I don't remember, but anyway, I had to select the new Personal Toolbar folder then click View, "Set as Personal Toolbar Folder" . That fixed it.

I have Mozilla 1.0.1 not Netscape 7 but I think these are two separate items. If you click on View in the browser, then Show/Hide, see if you have a checkmark in both Navigation Toolbar and Personal Toolbar.

Ramona, thanks for jumping in to help. This problem has been frustrating me for days! Pls have a look at what I wrote Dec 2, where I described what shows up on the toolbar and what doesn't.

    Hi aks,
    Roger that!

I would do exactly what Alice suggested:
    Open the Bookmark Manager
Create a new Folder named "Personal Toolbar "
Move: Ask Jeeves, Google, and WindowsBBS to the new Folder
Highlight the new Personal Toolbar Folder
    Click on "View "
Select : Set as Personal Toolbar Folder
Then delete the "old" Personal Toolbar Folder

Post back and let us know how it goes.

Ramona, I think you're about to understand my frustration here. I followed the instructions you wrote:

    "Open the Bookmark Manager
Create a new Folder named "Personal Toolbar "
Move: Ask Jeeves, Google, and WindowsBBS to the new Folder
Highlight the new Personal Toolbar Folder
    Click on "View "
Select : Set as Personal Toolbar Folder
Then delete the "old" Personal Toolbar Folder "

And actually, this is the second time I tried this.

This time when I deleted the old Personal Toolbar Folder, both the old and the new disappeared, so I added another new one and selected it as the Personal Toolbar Folder.

I left it empty and checked the toolbar. Mail, AIM, Home, Radio, My Netscape, Shop, and Bookmarks still show --- but so do Ask Jeeves and Windows BBS now. But they don't show in the empty folder.

I added Google to the folder. Now Google has joined all the others on my toolbar. However, the folder includes only Google.

I have spent hours on this! Thanks for whatever you can offer, short of suggesting I use Explorer. Thanks.

Ramona, I just now closed down Netscape and relaunched it. WindowsBBS and Ask Jeeves were gone from the toolbar.

I added them manually, and they're both there and in my Personal Toolbar folder now.

I still have all those others, though (on the toolbar only) and would still like to get rid of them

    Hi Alice,

To remove items from the Navigator Toolbar, and I think you're referring to:
Mail, AIM, Home, Radio, My Netscape, Shop, and Bookmarks, correct? I think I'm getting a little confused too... ;)

Go to Preferences|Navigator. Uncheck any item which you wish to remove from the Navigator Toolbar.

If this is not what you want to do, let me know...

Oh, isn't this awful? I've checked there, as well, but I just checked again. The only item checked there are Bookmarks, Home, Print, and Mail, and I want to keep those.

Oh boy, I had already checked there, as well, Ramona, but I checked again and did not see any of those items checked --- BUT I decided to try checking them, backing out of Netscape, re-entering Netscape and deleting them --- and they're gone!!!

Thanks for directing my attention back to the Navigator preferences. That did the trick!

    Do as Romona instructed.

When I had this problem I found that I had to CYCLE thru the process a couple of time for it to take.

    example:

    "mail "

if it checked , uncheck it. Select "OK "

    Any effect ?

    Yes = Good

    No.....

Edit Pref -> put Check in "mail" select "OK "

Edit Pref -> uncheck "mail" Select "OK "

    Effect ?

    Yes= Good

    No = I'm Stumped

Only other thing that I can hink of is "override" in User.js file, but that is a real stretch.

    Good Luck.

PS: It appears that you solved the problem while I was composing this, so ingore it.........

    Hi Ramona,

I wasn't asking for help  I was trying to help aks :)

I thought maybe he had the Personal Toolbar hidden, and was confused by the entries in the Navigation Toolbar, which is why I asked him to checkmark both of them, using View, Show/Hide.

    Quite confusing isn't it??
