    Please help me if you can but if you don't know, please don't B.S. me!!!
    I think these were done by a tweaking software (ITweakUPro) I had tried out in the past and although I had done [Reset to Default]...it obviously didn't :mad:
    1) [Like This Folder] option is greyed out therefore I cannot set/ retain folder formats!
    2) [Thumbnails] is no longer in the [View] pull down menu; I can check thumbnail views box in the folder properties but cannot see thumbnail pages later on!

    Last week (IMPORTANT):
    Tried the 98SE SP1 pack posted on Majorgeeks.com and it completely ******* up my O/S. I informed Majorgeeks and went to the developer's website for help but neither answered! STAY AWAY FROM THIS SP1 PACK, EVEN THOUGH THE GUY SAYS IT'S FROM MS...BECAUSE IT WILL HOSE YOUR SYSTEM!!!:mad: I had to re-install a "disaster recovery" volume on CDs I had made quite a few months ago and had to rebuild a lot of stuff! MAJOR HEADACHE!

    This week:
    When I attempt to burn with Nero (v6302) the burn process fails and I get the message: "SCSI/ATAPI command timeout error" :mad:
    This has never happened before and I suspect they (Ahead) will tell me once again that "there is something wrong with my Windows operating system ", rather than admit their software is full of bugs (YES...I find quite a few bugs everytime they update!!!). Roxio is even worse:( BUT, IF IT IS IN 98SE...what could it be?????? Is there an ATAPI update somewhere? I re-installed [wnaspi32.dll] from 98CD and that didn't work!

    Thanks for any help guys! If I can help in return I will!

    Mistermab - Welcome to the Board :)

    Have you run System File Checker?

    Start > Run > type in sfc > Enter.

    Tried the 98SE SP1 pack posted on Majorgeeks.com and it completely****

    I do have a question and just looking for info.

    Where or when did there get to be a SP1 for 98SE from MS ? Have I missed ( very possible ) something somewhere ? Or is it something that the site mentioned came up with ?

    I know there was a SP1 for 98 FE. I know there is a SP1 for IE but I am ( was ) not aware of a SP1 for 98SE itslef. And seing as how all three of my 98SE machines are ( and always have ) behaving ( behaved ) nicely I would more than likely not use it anyway.

    mistermab,

    Did you read what you were getting!!!?:
    http://www.techconnect.ws/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=4997

    Provided that this piece of homemade software/installer was properally written and did reportedly include official MS updates it also included several homemade tweaks such as ram not to mention updates to scripting vbruns usb wdm....etc

    Any of which can and has been known to cause problems depending on the users own hardware/software.

    Also some updates have been buggy and withdrawn from MS anywhere from a day to week afterwards. How do you know these buggy hotfixes weren't included in this package.

    Sheesh...I could keep going on about why this was a bad idea but the point is it was.

    My mind boggles at the future problems you may have had as a result of windows own way of keeping track of what you have updated and what you need, not to mention what you have updated that you didn't need....

    Forgive us if we seem a little glib in response to your post. We have experienced, seen, heard and helped enough people through official MS updates gone bad that a gamble on an UNOFFICIAL service package seems to go beyond "taking a risk" to downright "Thrill Seeking" or "Russian Roulette ". As you have learned the bullet was in the chamber in this case..... :)

    ===========
    What did this this "disaster recovery" volume on CDs include: backup a harddrive, system or designated user folder/file choice?

    What program was used to do the backingup and the restoring?

    What do you mean by "rebuild a lot of things "?

    ===========
    Although you may still be a little shell shocked....

    Have you gone to Microsoft for updates?

    Have you gone to your own OEM support site for updates?

    Have you looked for major software and hardware updates?

    ===========
    What version of IE? Tried a repair?

    ========
    Did this restored backup include the registry?

    If this was not a harddrive image recovery: You aren't trying to run applications that have been installed after the dated backup you restored, are you?

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
    This may get your thumbnail view back:
    http://aumha.org/regfiles.php#tn
    This is the download from the above^
    http://aumha.org/downloads/thumnail.zip
    Or
    Real easy to access this. Right click on a folder in Windows Explorer, and select Properties, then put a check in Enable Thumbnail View. Then right click again, go to View, then Thumbnails. If you are in a window such as you access through My Documents\My Pictures, right click on a blank area to get the Menu.
    OR
    Search the help-net archives using thumbnail view as the keyword filters and making sure win98 is the froum designated.

    ====Just a quickie for Folder Options=========
    Try the "Folder Options" via windows explorer:
    WInkey plus E
    or rightclick startbutton and select explore

    If you've done this via the startbutton and a scroll to "settings "> "Folder Options" it will be greyed out. No actual folder to view or set is open therefore the option is pointless and Greyed.

    The best solution in this case, especially since there was an unofficial service pack installed, is to format the drive and do a clean install of windows. You have problems compounding other problems.
    I am sure that you will only use the official Windows Update site for the updates.
