I have the 98se boot disk and cd rom, and was told i could get the
main part of the cd on a 100mb zip disk if i took out the stuff i didnt
need. The only thing is im a proper noob!! and am unsure of what i can

    Hi

Im afraid that you wouldnt fit 98se setup on a 100MB zip. With all you dont need removed from the cd, it still uses around 120MB. And you cant easily bring up a zip drive from a dos prompt with no Windows on the PC. In most cases you cant at all. Most zip drives need windows.

As a tech if i got this in as a job, i would take the hard disk out of the laptop and put it in my PC as a secondary drive, (with a 3.5" to 2.5" pin converter) and copy the win98 setup files into a folder on the disk.

Because you probably dont have the hardware or knowledge to do this yourself and may not want to pay a tech to do it, there is one other way i can think of. You will still need access to a 2nd PC for this as well.

You can connect a PC to the laptop using a laplink cable attached to the parallel ports (printer port) on your laptop and the PC. You would then need to run a program like the one i provide a link to below (an old version of laplink).

The program will have to be run on the PC and the laptop at the same time (a copy of the program on both units) with the cable in place. At the laptop end it can be run from the floppy drive, and you can easily fit this program on the Windows boot floppy. You simply type LL3 at the a:\ prompt in this case to run it. It is a stand alone single file program and doesnt need to be installed to work.

You then get a 2 panes interface that shows the c: drive on each PC. You can change the PCs drive being accessed to CD and copy the setup to your hard disk. If you need further help using laplink, ask. I will then provide more detailed instructions on how to do this.

Heres a link to the program laplink 3 which works in windows 3.11,95,98,ME and in some cases NT, 2000 and XP.

    http://users.tpg.com.au/adsl5muj/ll3.exe

The file is an exe file, so if you are scared it may be harmful make sure the antivirus program on the downloading PC is up to date first.

Hope i didnt confuse you too much.

Jay, I don't think you'll be able to do that. Why not consider Win95 instead? It can be had on floppies or else you can create your own self extracting set from an install cd using Winzip. I think it takes about 2 dozen or so. Win98 would take around 100 so go figure. Even then you'll not have Word on it. That's another obstacle since you'll have to have it on floppies as well. You've got your work cut out for you.

I think the person that said you could trim Win98 down to 100 megs meant to do it by trimming a fully installed system of its bloat files. That won't apply in your case since you need the entire Win98 folder along with the Drivers folder to install with.

You might be better off getting some tech to hook you up via DCC or LapLink and do a transfer of the necessary Win 98 CD install files from another computer. It's definitely not a newbie project unless you're willing to do lots of research and learning.

I don't even know if you have a floppy drive or any data ports that you can use. What is on the laptop drive now? Perhaps it crashed and the HD may not even work. Lots of questions??

For some expert help, perhaps check with your local High School and see if they have a computer club that might have someone interested in giving you a helping hand while you both benefit.
