Machine still restarts on shutdown, running SE98, loaded patch and ran scanreg with no success. Any ideas ???? At start shutdown I still get a quick glimpse of 98 window and BSOD. BSOD is so fast I cant read it, and then I restart and have to shutdown with control button.

Thanks for the reference's. I checked the registry, ran the patch, disabled and enabled the P&P BIOS and disabled the scan for macafee for floppies all to no avail. This machine is in a loop on shutdown and just refuses to give in BTW I checked the registry entry for fast shutdown at "0 ". Anything else I can do short of giving it a swim in one of our canals?????

Try keying this into a run box:
    C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Shell32.dll,SHExitWindowsEx 1

That should cause a shutdown. If not i wondering if corrupted Shell32.dll
    or rundll.exe.

Nice suggestion though, any others before this thing becomes a submarine.

Well, that command with a 2 instead is restart. Sounds like you tried everything in the universe already. Don't have any icon changing programs modifying shell32.dll do you ? That dll is largely a resource for system icons, guess i would restore it with SFC just to make sure it's not goofed up.
Doubtfull that will help : how about a reinstall overtop ?

If you do replace the Shell32.Dll file with SFC, you'll want to visit Windows Update. You may have a small critical update waiting for you, concerning this file.

Got thru step 6 and after disabling each device I tried to shutdown but it restarted anyway and then when it got halfway thru icons on page it hung up, cntrl/alt/del showed Enabcdpt not responding. Canceled properties and then hung up in shutdown. Turned off with button manualy, restarted and went to f-8 to clear cinemaster, then it went back to the SOS.

"ENABCDPT" is a CD ROM driver. Go to your manufacturer site, and get a new driver.

Will do as instructed. Also do you think an old copy of MacAfee about 4 yrs old on the machine could be causing this problem. If nothing else the people that read about this problem will sure have a bag-full of things to try. Really appreciate your helping. Am trying to get this thing running so I can ship it to my daughter. Thanks again for hanging in there, you and all the others . :D

:) Did the whole nine yards and still have the problem. I decided to do a reinstall over present but when I try to use disc get the message that CDROM is an older version than am presently using-setup will be disabled. Same message on 98 upgrade disc. Back in 3.1 or 95, I forget which, I used a work around for this problem by renameing a file or something on that order to get around this problem. Naturally I dont recall what I did, now. Do you have any ideas as to how to get around this????? This system is an update from 95 if that makes any difference.

Get into dos and rename Win.Com to Win.Old.
I do think a clean install would be better.

:) Thanks for the tip. I'm going to install and give my daughter the programs I have and let her do with them what she will. Do I have to go back into DOS and change the name from win.old back to the original, or does the re-write write over the old files and start anew. Also should I use the old 98disc and then the upgrade, or, just the upgrade disc? Thanks again. This is a real learning experience. You really dont know! how much you dont know until you get in a bind.

I don't understand why your 98se will not reinstall overtop, done it myself a few dozen times. Retry it with your 98se CD ... doubleclick setup.exe in \win98 folder on the CD.

Anyway, if you follow Markp62 and rename win.com, it should reinstall (and you just delete the old file afterward). Setup to be ran in DOS by this method of course.

If you go the better way and do a clean install: it depends if you have the 98se "Updates" or 98se "Upgrade ". The Updates requires that 98fe be already installed, whereas the Upgrade will allow you to install only 98se (you will be requested to verify your old licence via "insert the old CD" temporarily).
Note that if you do a clean install...you will need all your motherboard drivers to reninstall afterwards.

Either way MAKE a startup floppy now : add/remove...startup disk. Even if you already have one, make another.

Markp62: Thanks for the link !
