I have a 95 drive with data on it that i need to preserve, but I can't get it to run on any of my newer systems, it doesn't have a cat5 port, and I can't find a 95 driver fo a c.d.rw i have available. Can I install 98se over 95 without losing all the data?

    fridgitator,

No personal experience with installing over the top, but everything I've seen/read indicates that you can. If you want to preserve the data that you have, and installing a slave drive with 98 on it, over the top is the way to go. Naturally, you need to have the upgrade version and not the full version.

Thank you for your response. I seem to be running out of options, and 95 doesn't offer much. At least in 98 I know a few things I can do.

    Do it the easy way.
    In 95, rename "win.com" in the c:\windows folder to "win.bak ".
    Do NOT restart the computer.
Insert the 98 CD, and run setup.
During the process, simply change the install path from it's default of "WINDOWS.000" to "Windows ", and it will install.
No need for an "upgrade" cd.

    I have put 98 over 95.

    98SE over 98.

XP Pro over 98 SE and no problems.

BUT you do need to make sure you boot from a Floppy ( make that a power off boot to the floppy ) and WATCH CAREFULLY that the new version goes into THE EXISTING Windows directory. Normally this is C:\Windows.

It is also better to set Video back to standard VGA setup.

But I have also had many questions ( from local professionals ) as to how I got away with it.

But even if a few probelms do come up, you have lost no more ( in fact less ) than what you would by doing a format first.
