I downloaed and ran the patch.

It only changed the file in the C:\Windows\Command folder.

It did not change the one in the C:\Windows\Command\EBD folder. So I copied the new over and it shows the new date.

I made a new Startup disk and the new FDISK was not transfered. The SUD still had the old one.

Why this is I do not know yet. Unless it is getting its files from the original Windows setup files which are on the HD.

So I MANUALLY copied the new over to my SUD.

So I suggest that anyone using that patch makes sure that it gets copied over to the Startup Disk.

    Any ideas are welcome.

Is this a brand new fdisk update?
MS released an update a while ago that supports larger disk drives.

I ALWAYS manually replace the files on my SUD's anyway to be certain I have what I want. (I also add smartdrv, mouse and a few other handy apps - mouse is nice for the edit program)

The update itself may not be that new. Just new to me.

I tested it just to see what it would do.

I copied it to loacations on the HD where I could find it.

I assummed ( apparrently incorrectly ) that it ( the new file ) would be transfered to the SUD when creating a new one.

I was surprised to find that it did not. Why I have not figured out yet.

I posted thread just make users aware of the possible problem.

Me too. And without things I do not want.

Deltree, Scanerg, Xcopy and Mouse are all on it.

No menu. no readme. Just a boot to the A:\prompt With CDROM support.

    PS.
I also have an Original. :) just in case :)

It seems to me that it gets the files for the boot disk from your original windows files. I seem to remember that if you don't have your windows cab files on the hard drive you are prompted to insert the cd when you make a boot disk. Could be wrong though. It 's been a while since I've done this on a system that didn't have the files on the hard drive. One way to find out. Rename your cab file folder and then try making a boot disk and see what happens.

    You nailed it down tight.

I renamed the folder containing the setup files.

Went to create a startup disk

Message was " Please insert disk that has the Windows files on it. "

    Fdisk is in Base5.cab.

Can I maybe get the new file over there by adjusting attributes ?

If the cabs are on your HD, just open the Base5.cab in winzip, delete the existing fdisk and then add the new one to the cab.

http://www.amazingtechs.com/tutorials/butter1.htm A bootdisk tutorial, length, but very comprehensive.

To get the updated fdisk onto you floppy , R-click and use sendTo, floppy. Let it overwrite the old version. The cab files are compressed, so I do not think you will be able to do anything with them like you want.

If the cabs are on the drive, you can do anything at all you want to them, edit their contents, modify the files inside them, delete contents, extract files, change the files' attributes etc. etc. etc.

That site is useful for nothing other than getting the file.

Read ALL of my replys so that you do not get surprised when the file is not where you expect to find it.

That site is just one of many of MS sites containing mis-leading or incomplete info.

And as far as I can see it says nothing about the possibility of having to replace it again if an overtop re-install of Windows is done.

Relatively simple way around the original win98 FDISK HDD size limit during initial setup is to use an ME boot disk which includes the revised FDISK. Think Train even referenced that in that short lttle thread of Lis's.

    MORE INFORMATION
This package installs the updated Fdisk.exe to the Windows\Command and Windows\Options\Cabs folders, on a computer running Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition. If you are starting a computer from a Windows 98 Startup Disk in order to partition and format the hard disk, you should copy the updated Fdisk.exe from the Windows\Command folder to the Startup Disk, replacing the original Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition version of Fdisk.exe on the Startup Disk.

http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm Winme bootdisk has the updated fdisk, copy it off and put it on yours. or just use the WinMe bootdisk to do the fduisking and when you reboot switch to the corret OS bootdisk and sys C: the primary partition.

The reason for posting the link was simply that it had not been done in this thread and to save people hunting around for it should they wish to download the file.

I do not have any comment on Microsoft's "policy" of supplying incorrrect or misleading information and do not wish to enter in any arguement over it.

I know why the link was posted. I have no problem with same.

My reply was not directed at Mahmud603

I just wanted users to be aware that it was not uselful for anything other than getting the file.

If something such Train wrote was on the site it would be fine. But there is no menton of anything other than the new file updating the old to make it see the larger HDs.

If I had not gone looking I would have expected the new file to be on a new SUD. But it is not. And may not be unless we copy it over there.

That little project also taught me that the SUD was not made from where I thought it was.

So I confirmed a previous thought ( do not always trust MS info ) and learned something new at the same time.

OK. If you say it is there then it must be there.

I just tried the link again and I am not getting the full page. Maybe I wasn't before either. I am not getting full pages other places today either.

Will do some house cleaning, run a repair on IE and have another go at it.

Right now I am having over all Internet problems. Even getting here.

OK folks I was wrong. And I apologize.

    The info is there.

I cleaned out the TIF, Cookies, History folders, Ran a repair on IE and Lo & behold there is the full page with the info.

I also reworked SpyBlaster. I have noticed with that turned on I was not getting the full complete progress bar on some sites. ( a lot in fact )

This site is even MUCH better now.
