    Re 98 Defrag Utility

I appear to have sorted this problem by using checkdisc, fix errors. While running this for my friend in order to resolve her defrag problems it seems to have repaired and or replaced the corrupt files and the defrag is now running as good as win 98 gets. Many thanks for everyones help.regards,pc fanatic.

Note that scandisk does not "replace" corrupted files.

If it actually "fixed" something, you need to find out (if possible) which files were involved.

Open the file c:\Scandisk.log with Notepad.

Depending on the "fix ", some files will need to be deleted and restored because they really are not "fixed ".

    if you lost data, well....

but you might hafe lost system files too

W98 has a nice tool called System File Checker. I do not have a W98 machine on hand to check where it should be, but you may search for it in Windows Help on your comp.

It allows you to look for files that should be there and compares them with either the installation files on your HD
    (C:\windows\options\cabs) or your Windows CD.

It may take a lot of patience to do a whole check, so it may pay to wait for smtg to go wrong before getting suspicious. :p
