My OS is Windows 2000...not networked...am using Netscape 7.2. I get frequent Program Error messages stating
"NETSCP.exe has generated errors and will be closed by
Windows. You will need to restart the program." Then
the program shuts down. I've tried reloading it but it doesn't help. Sometimes the program won't even open and I have to reboot. Help!

Welcome to the Forum, Ann Fisher!

    Hi Ann,

Can you tell us when the error occurs, i.e., in the Mail component, printing, etc., or is it random?

If you're using QuickLaunch, disable it.
    Clear your Cache and History
    Edit | Preferences | Advanced | Cache
    Edit | Preferences | Navigator | History

Before restarting Netscape, open the Task Manager and End Task for netscp, if it is open.

The error message occurs both when I'm working with
my e-mail and when I'm playing on eBay. Nothing specific
seems to set it off. I also have a Mail Washer Pro program
but that doesn't seem to be causing a problem. I have
disabled the quicklaunch...and have emptied the history but
can't find the "cache ". In my Netscape the history is in
advanced...thanks for your advice. I'd sure love to get
to the bottom of this. I can't even open my address book...

    Hi Ann,

If you're using a Theme other than the default Modern, then revert back to the Modern Theme.

    Close Netscape:
Delete the chrome.rdf file in the salted (xxxxxxxx.slt) folder
    and
the XUL.mfl file, to force NS7 to rebuild the default themes.

If this doesn't help then temporarily disable your Mail Washer, to see if that is the culprit.

BTW, what OS are you running?

If you're usiing Netscape 7.02, then these are the locations for the History and Cache files:
    Edit | Preferences | Advanced | Cache
    Edit | Preferences | Navigator | History

These files can also be deleted in Windows Explorer, but ensure that Netscape is closed when editing:

Depending on your OS - look here for the (Profile Location)

    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt
    Delete the entire Cache Folder
    Delete the history.dat file
They will be rebuilt when Netscape is launched.

Let us know if any of these workarounds help. If not, I would create a new Profile. Guidelines HERE

    Ramona :D

P.S. Here is a listing of the Bug Reports on eBay. I haven't had the chance to look at all of them yet, but I do know there were some problems with Mozilla 1.1. Since Netscape 7.02 is built on Mozilla 1.02, these bugs may not relate to the problems you're having.

Hi, Ramona...thanks for all your help. I am going to try the
detailed fixes you suggested but they will take me some
time. I am using Windows 2000. I had a hard time finding
my profiles...they are in Documents & Settings...I tried once
to do a new profile but didn't copy and paste right and none
of my address or preferences were transferred. I'll work on
    it some more.

Question: What is "Theme ". This is new to me. Ann

Hi, Ramona. I deleted all of the chrome.rdf and XUL.mfl files...I had about six of each! I then rebooted and
Netscape does work, but I still get the random error
messages; it's not mail washer. Since none of this has
fixed the problem I will work on doing a new profile...it
will have to wait for now though since I have lots of "real "
work to do to get ready for some closings. More later.

Ann, I had the same problem you are having. I downloaded the latest driver for my modem and haven't had the problem since. Give that a try. You may have to go the modem manufacturer's site to get the latest driver. Open 'My Computer' then Control Panel, then Modem, it will tell you what model you have. Worth a try.

Thanks, Loren. I have a "cable" modem, not a telephone
modem. Maybe I'll check with comcast to see if they have
    any ideas. Ann

    Hi, Ramona...

I have set up a new profile but am really having an address book problem. I have followed all the steps listed in your e-mail "Manually Copy the Netscape 7x Address Book" but
there is nothing in my Address book when I try to access
it through Window on the toolbar. There is nothing in
EITHER profile. I also cannot access my mail from my new
profile...worse; when I click on preferences the Mail & Newsgroup setting option as disappeared!

(Loren, I located and downloaded a new driver for my broadband modem but it didn't help).

The error message now comes up everytime I exit
exit Netscape. I'll keep trying but the address book
situation is very frustrating and I don't know how to
    access my Mail settings anymore.

    Netscape Address Book

Ramona, I simply cannot access my address book. I get
a blank book and when I click on "new card" or any other
option, absolutely nothing happens. This was true in my
    original profile, too. Ann

    Ramona, I realized I hadn't changed the .s and .w files...
when I went to my old profile there were two of each.
Apparently there is supposed to be only one of each.
Could this be part of the problem? If so, which files
    should I delete?????

    Ann,

    xxxxxxxx.w = fillform data
    xxxxxxxx.s = password data

These two files are likely not the source of your troubles. You only need one of each. The two files currently in use should be listed in your prefs.js file.

Hi, Ramona. I followed your advice, got rid of all the old
Netscape files, and downloaded 7.5 fresh. It did not
give me any mail set up options and there is no address
book (probably because there are no mail options). Now
    I can't access my e-mail! What do I do?

You do mean that you installed 7.02, right? Did you use the full install, or the online installer?

When you look for the Mail Settings do you have your Mail Window open? The Mail & Address Book Account Settings cannot be viewed in the Browser Preferences window. To set up the Accounts you must do so through the Mail component. I can only hope it's this simple. These are Screen Shots of the Mail Account Settings. This is what you should see when you click on the "New Account" Tab near the bottom of the Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings window (if only you can get there)...

Are you saying the Address Book in the OLD Profile was not working? If so, then you have a corrupt Address Book, no doubt caused by the NETSCP.exe error crashes. In Windows Explorer, open Notepad
    Click on File | Open
    Browse to the abook.mab file
With the file open, can you see your addresses?

    If so, try this:
    Open Netscape and Address Book
Select: Tools | Export in .LDIF format

    Close Netscape
    Open Windows Explorer
Open the .LDIF file in Notepad and look for obvious signs of corruption, such as long lines, blank spaces or binary garbage. Fix them, then save the file, close Notepad.

Open Netscape and "Import" the repaired abook.mab file.

I'll be in and out this evening, but will keep checking back...

    Ramona

Ramona, I started over and downloaded Netscape 7.2
again from the internet without customizing it. I can now
get my e-mail and things seem to be okay. I was able
    to get my bookmarks.

Now, and this is a problem that should be fairly easy for
    you to help me with:

When I did my profile back up, my addresses were saved.
But, I don't know how to get them from my back up disk
into the right folder. I tried to cut and paste but then
when I opened the address book it was still empty. Any
    suggestions?

    Hi Ann,

Look at the Properties | File Attributes of your abook.mab file:
    Right click
    Select: Properties
If "Read Only" is enabled, then disable by removing the tick.

If this is not the case, you should be able to copy the backup of the abook.mab file, and paste it into the NEW Profile. The *.SLT file is where the abook.mab file should be pasted.

Look HERE for your Profile location.

I hope you haven't lost your good Address Book backup by doing a cut and paste. Copy and paste is always a good idea, then you don't risk losing your backup.

Keep us posted on your progress...
