I've been using the 7.0 preview and really like it. However, I was wondering if anyone has seen a problem I'm experiencing with link history.

When I follow a link, it changes color indicating the use as is normal. But that change only stays during that "load" of NS. After a reboot and a new start of NS, the link no longer shows up as having been visited.

Not a killer, but an inconvenience.

    Hi Cal E,

    I haven't had that experience with Netscape 7.0 PR1.

    Check your Preferences under: Preferences|Appearance|Colors
When a web page provides its own colors and background

    Select:
Always use colors and background specified by the web page

What is your History setting in Preferences?

I do have "When a web page provides its own colors and background" selected and my History is set to "30 days. "

    Hi Cal,

This is strange indeed, and most annoying for you. You might try deleting your history.dat, history.mab, or netscape.hst(if it exists) files... done with Netscape closed.

In your History Preference, try setting your History to 3 days, instead of 30. You can change it back if this doesn't help. Let us know if this has any effect on your problem.

I have my History set for 3 days, and I delete my history.dat file every day. Since I can't recreate your problem, I'm hoping these settings might eliminate the problem for you.

    Hi Ramona,

I could not find a "history.xxx" file in the NS 6/7 subdirectories, but using the settings you recommended and clearing the history did the trick. It would be nice to know what the problem was . . . . . but hey, after years of working with PCs (mostly hardware) I no longer get humg up on figureing the why, but accpet the results and move on.

    Thanks for the helping hand!

    Hi Cal,

Your history.dat, history.mab files are located in your Profiles folder:

    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\username\xxxxxxx.slt

You do back up your Profile frequently, don't you.... ;)

Glad the new settings straightened out your link dilemma!

The History problem was a bug in Netscape 6, and looks as if it was carried over to Netscape 7. Just clean up your History file frequently and it should be O.K.

A friend helped me set up a .bat file which is called from the autoexec.bat file. This cleans up my history and cache files for all my Netscapes and Mozilla on Startup.

    Ramona,

Oh, oh. When I got to work today the links from yesterday were gone! Could this have something to do with the PC clock? I don't know.

Yesterday here at work I powered off several times and each time it worked. Then last night I gave it a try at home and it worked - that's when I prematurely raised the victory flag.

When I get home tonight I'm sure the same thing has happened.

Is there a way to funnel bugs like this to NS or do you have any offical/unoffical input?

    Hi Cal,

Deleting the history.dat file should have eliminated your visited links problem. The only other solution I know of would be to create a new Profile. It might be worth a try.

You certainly can offer your feedback on any problems with Netscape 7. Just click on the "Help" tab and select "Feedback Center ". There you can fill out a problem report, suggestion form, or survey. Netscape doesn't respond to the reports, however.

Keep us informed about any progress on your problem.
