Try using the Update Driver option for your video card to accept any older drivers that you may have or can download. HTH. :)

What I mean is if you have a disk, CD or floppy, with your video card drivers for Win95/98/NT/2K. ;)

Try *Updating* and forcing WinXP into accepting one of the above in order to use the desired lower resolution.

Windows 2000 drivers could possibly work, but that's dangerous because most of the video subsystem in WinXP has changed from 2000.

Much better than that, take some little, old Windows App (but NOT from WinXP C.D.). For example, get a copy of Win98's "NotePad.exe" (found in "C:\Windows" in WINDOWS 98), then make a shortcut to it.

Now, right-click that shortcut, select "Properties ", and go to the "Compatibility" tab. Put a check-mark on the option that says "Use 640x480 resolution..." or something like that.

Et Voilà. Every time you double-click that shortcut, Windows jumps in 640x480 mode! And you can get only 256 paletized colors if you want, too. Just keep that annoying, old and blank notepad windows minimized. If you close it, Windows will jump back to 800x600 or whatever,

Now, if you "kill" it (via Task Manager ") it's possible that Windows keep in 640x480 until next reboot.

Another thing I observed is, Windows don't remember your desired monitor's refresh rate frequency for this resolution, using the "Hardware Default" of 60 Hz. EVERY TIME, but for a T.V. Screen this will not be an issue. ;)
