    Hello all!

A friend has asked me to build a "reasonably priced" computer for him. I'm considering the AMD Athlon 64, socket 754.

As I understand it, the old trusted 32-bit Windows XP Professional can be run on that platform.

Right or wrong? Can someone, please, confirm!

    Thanks for Your time,
    Christer

I browsed the AMD homepage and found a few FAQ's:

I assume that includes NT-based operating systems.

And, you could get bold - the 64 bit version of XP is free for a year but I understand drivers may be an issue and applications an even bigger issue. Just fired up my first 64 bit system this morning - it will be getting 2003 Server and I'll be getting another education.

    ;)

    Hi Rockster2U!

I don't think my friend, well, my friends son actually, is easily tricked into ...... :p ...... "experimental mode ". My idea is to build something that has a fair life span and I believe that Athlon 64 is the way to go. Socket 939 makes it considerably more expensive, that's why I settled for socket 754.

When I myself get some excessive cash burning holes in my wallet, I will go that route but by then ...... ...... socket 939 will probably be obsolete!
