Hi all: I have DSL ISP, which includes NC dial up in case DSL goes down. I had no problems with this in prior iteration of XP, now have problem in new machine same OS loaded from image of DI7.

In Aida32, it is not listed in Physical Devices, it is listed in Windows Devices.

    Com Port 2, IRQ3, Exclusive.

Device manager tells me modem working properly.

Drivers for Standard 56KB Modem (no brand listed)

The modem is about 5 years old and if I remember correctly, came from an outfit called SMP.

In Modem properties Diagnostics, under "modem information" lists: "HardwareID moto1_gen" Cannot be highlighted.

Query modem button results: modem did not respond.

I have not yet tried to set up dial up connection.

Also, if I can get this working, how do I set up the dial up connection without messing up the DSL connection. I vaguely remember previous problems doing this.

Any and all help will be appreciated.

    Martin

Hi Martin, you know I live in Win98 land:) ...anyway....

I think you will need manufacturer's drivers for it. It may be too old for XP and no XP drivers were made.

You probably need to get the exact model number....ALTHOUGH, it may run on generic drivers if you know what chipset it has, eg: USRobotics, Lucent, Conexant, etc.

Jeez, thanks mattman. The darn thing shows up in install new hardware as 1. lucent win modem, 2. generic. When I try to install the lucent drivers, stored on HDD, I get the message: modem not present.

This is the same modem that was installed and working in this XP machine before upgrading with new MOBO, CPU, HDDs, video card, onboard RAID, case, power supply, etc, etc. :D

Anyhow, the point being, why is the XP telling me that the lucent win modem is not present? Got the same XP drivers!

You have got me thinking, I'm going to uninstall in device mgr, pull card from slot, clean contacts, re-install, re-boot, see what happens. Maybe??

Wife calling, can't do it now, got to go to Mother in law's house and clean her carpet.

    Hey Martin, how's it going?

If it is a Lucent Winmodem (check the brand on the main chip, I do take it it is an internal) there is a generic driver program here:
    http://modemsite.com/56k/ltwin8.asp
    Along with trouble shooting instructions.

Internal modems should be allocated to Com port 3 or 4 and it should be done by Windows when the correct drivers are recognised. So after installing the drivers see if you can do Diagnostics on it. If diagnostics are good then reboot, do not try to connect with it. On reboot Windows should allocate it to the correct Com port (the install program may tell you to reboot anyway). You may then find you have two modems, one will work the other won't (got stumped by this on the last install).

    Matt

At least that's how I remember it, the proceedure may vary according to memory loss:D
