    512, 1024, more??

    Hi all,

I've just bought myself a new PC with a P4 3Ghz processor with Hyperthreading and 800Mhz bus and 512MB 400Mhz DDR RAM. I'll be running Windows XP Pro. I think it would be beneficial to add some more memory (it is pretty cheap these days), but am not sure how much. Should I add an extra 512 or 1024MB, would I notice the difference with a total memory of 1536MB over 1024? and will it be worth spending the extra money? PC use will be surfing, gaming, uploading/downloading, reading/writing DVD's etc. Just the normal stuff.

    Cheers,

    Lee

    Hello Lee!

Last weekend we built a new computer for a friend and installed the OS and programs. His specs are 2.8GHz P4/800 with 2x512 MB RAM.

He is going to use the computer to digitalize VHS video films and do a bit of editing which is the reason for 1,024 MB RAM. For Your "normal" use 2x256 MB would probably be adequate but 4x256 MB or 2x512 MB wouldn´t hurt.

I assume that You have four memory slots on the motherboard. For Hyper Threading to work properly You need to have 2 or 2x2 memory sticks in parallel. I assume that You have 2x256 MB and adding another pair would do fine. They should be of the same type to perform well.
The alternative would be to replace the existing 2x256 MB with 2x512 MB.

The way You describe the use of Your computer, there is no need to go above 1,024 MB.

Hi Lee -Welcome to the Board :)

IMO 1 gig of ram would suit you nicely and you should notice the benefit over the 512 Mb you already have - doubt you need more.
