In trying to find out what kind of DVD Burner I have, I stumbled on a site that offers free firmware downloads. In reading some info on the page, they say that you can find out all you need to know by downloading and running a program called NERO INFO TOOL. My drive is a Philips DVD+RW-D28. I wanted to find out mainly if it was capable of writing to dual layer discs, as I am trying to back up a Navigation DVD that came with a Lexus vehicle. I found that the data on the DVD is 6.2gigs big and most blank DVDs can only hold 4.7. Nero Info Tool gives you a great deal of info under 6 different tabs: Drive/Disc/Configuration/Software/Drivers/Hardware/ASPI.
It was under ASPI that I saw a big red warning that said "Your ASPI installation is corrupted" The ASPI selected in the dropdown window is "System ASPI ". The other selectable one is "NERO ASPI ". When selected, a yellow warning comes up stating "Not Installed ".
I never did find out if this drive is dual layer capable. I suspect not, since it is pretty old(2+years?). Under supported write features, there are checkmarks for CD-R,RW, and for DVD+R,+RW, and for buffer underrun protection. There is a DVD+RL DL that is not checked, and I suspect that this DL stands for dual layer, but I'm not sure. Supported modes are: Packet, TAO,DAO,SAO,RAW SAO,RAW SAO16,RAW SAO96,RAW DAO96.
So, two questions: Can I write to a dual layer disk and get 6.2gigs of data transferred? And, how can I repair the corrupted ASPI? Ok, three questions: What is the consequence of not repairing ASPI?
    Thanks.

I can't offer much help with the ASPI issue but can get you backed up on the 6+gig cd. ZIP the entire DVD and save the zip file on your hard drive. Download this and run it. Select the zip file and tell the software to make two files out of it. Then just put one file and the .bat file on one 4.7 DVD and the other file on another DVD. Now if you want to reinstall the program just copy both DVDs to a folder and run the .bat file. This will give you the complete zip file that you can unzip and use to install. Not always, but usually this will work. You may even find that after zipping the origional DVD that it will all fit on a standard DVD but I doubt it.

    ASPI and DVD burning

I did find the Radified site and saw that version 4.6 worked fine but the 4.71.2 was buggy. I'm just going to leave things alone. My CD music burning works fine, and I'm just going to abandon the idea of backing up the Lexus Navigation DVD. Thanks for your replies and help Jaylach and Whiskeyman.
