44 Processes Running?

    Is there any "rule of thumb" re: processes and the performance of my machine. My machine is running 44 processes currently. I notice that, for example, IEXPLORE.EXE appears twice in the process list and SVCHOST.EXE appears 4 times in the list. Can anybody help.
