    Hi there,

    When changing from attbi to comcast I had to change my user/profile name. I've done whats needed to create the new profile, copied the old user directory into the new one and have updated all the settings in mail indentity. Everything is fine bookmarks, old mail and addr book etc.

    Here's what I can't get past. When I click get messages the dialog box comes up and prompts for the p/w but the box shows its for my old user name with the new mail server name. How/why is it trying to get mail for a profile/user name that no longer exists on my system ? The old profile is deleted and all the setting are changed in Netscape. TIA for any help and/or suggestions.

    Try this:

    In Netscape 4.79 Edit | Preferences | Mail & Newsgroups | Mail Servers:
    Select your Incoming mail server* , click Edit, and make sure the Server Name and User Name are correct. UNcheck Remember Password if it is checked, then OK out and try to get your mail. See if you are prompted for the password your new username. If so, then you can go back and click Remember Password so that it is saved the next time.

    Hope that helps,

    Alice

    Thanks for the tip Alice but remember password was unchecked. I like to be prompted for it when getting mail. So I'm still stumped here.

    If no one else has any other suggestions I would try recreating the prefs.js file from scratch.

    You said before that you "copied the old user directory into the new one ". I think that the old user's prefs.js file may be the problem. When you copy files from an old username folder to a new username folder, you only are supposed to copy certain files:

    This is from http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/nsusersprof.html#up
    ===========copy/paste=============
    In the NEW user profile directory:
    (NOTE: If it asks to overwrite the files say yes.)

    1. Delete the files in the news folder and copy all the files from the old user profile news folder to the new news folder.

    # Delete the mail folder files and copy all the files from the old user profile mail folder to the new mail folder.

    # Copy your old bookmarks.htm to the new one.

    # Copy cookies.txt to the new one.

    # Copy all files with an extension of .NA2 to the new user profile directory. (This is your address book.)

    # Copy custom.dic to the new user profile directory. (This is your dictionary.)

    In the new user profile directory, add the following line to both of these files, LIPREFS.JS AND PREFS.JS. This will prevent the Netscape advertisement from coming up when you click on get mail: (The following should be all on one line, it might not be all on one line here.) Put it anywhere down in the data, just be sure it's on a line all by itself.

    user_pref( "mailnews.start_page.enabled ", false);

    That should do it. Now the data written in your user profile directory matches the version of Netscape that you currently have installed.

    When you run Netscape, a menu will come up with your old and new profiles listed. Run the new profile. Remember to set up all the things in EDIT/PREFERENCES. The first time you run mail it will ask for your password.
    ===========end c/p================

    Go inside your C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\newusername folder WITH NETSCAPE CLOSED. MOVE the prefs.js to a backup location. Restart Netscape. That should force Netscape to create an new prefs.js file. You will have to reenter all your preferences, including Mail Account server settings, but hopefully that will take care of the problem with the incorrect mail username appearing in the password prompt.

    Since you've saved the old prefs.js in a backup location, you can always copy it back if resetting your preferences doesn't work out.

    Alternately, create a new profile using the steps in the above copy/paste.

    Good Luck!

    Thanks Alice renaming prefs.js and firing up mail fixed it. I think I used this trick many moons ago when I had problems keeping deleted newsgroups deleted.

    Thanks again.
