Microsoft has posted a cumulative patch for Internet Explorer 5.01, 5.5 and 6.0. This patch includes the functionality of all previously released patches for Internet Explorer. In addition, it eliminates two newly discovered vulnerabilities.

Thanks but I think I'm safe.

I am running IE5.01 w/SP2 on a Win98 platform and as I read it, this doesn't apply to me.

Only the following are in need of it:

    Internet Explorer 6
Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2
Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1
Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 2 for Windows 2000 and NT

As I read it, this is a cumulative patch that includes the earlier problem-causing patch. It will be interesting to hear if the problems caused by the earlier patch have been fixed.

This machine is running IE5.5 w/sp2 so I just installed the patch.

Now I have just come from another post where I have had problems pasting a link in the post. I never had that happen before and tried editing it several way but finally gave up on doing ot with the Alias and just stuck it in straight.

Do you suppose that's related to the patch or is it just me or the BBS? I'll try it here just for laughs.

    www.98lite.net]IEradicator[/URL]

EDIT, see what I mean? The link is http//:www.98lite.net (I just typed that in) and on my clipboard it looks just like what I typed but lets see what pasting it delivers. http:\\www.98lite.net YEP works OKI so I'm thinking we have something to investigate here.

    Any ideas?

OK now I'll enter another link that is residing on my clipboard:

YankeeClipper WOW that worked fine, go figure. I guess the BBS doesn't like something about that first link, perhaps it's just one of those freak things that only happens to me. :D

EDIT 2, I think I see the problem, the link I copied has \\ instead of // and I got it from the text of the help file rather than my address window. That explains a lot. Let's try it with // bars now:

    IEradicator Bingo!

EDIT 3 OK, so I've wasted your time everyone, but at least somebody learned something, (Me) and the patch is no longer suspect, along with the BBS, both to whom I offer my sincerest apologies for even thinking like that. I'm off to repair my other post. :)

It is a Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer.

The other patch mentioned is a Windows Shell patch MS02-014 and is not included in this patch.

    Welshjim and Admin.
    Thanks for reply.
My machine crashed after second reboot and kept on comin' back to a blue screen. (of course I try these patches first on a spare system with a complete "ghost" in the background).
I'm trying to find out what caused the crash; anyone had a similar experience??
(btw; I'm running W98SE-W2Kdual boot/IE6 and installed the patch under W98SE.)

Thanks for clearing that up. Since the Q313829 patch shows in Help|About Internet Explorer, I just assumed it was an IE patch.

    To all,
Thanks for reply; I guess my machinecrash had nothing to do with the sec.patch. I better install it anyway.

I'm running W98SE-W2Kdual boot/IE6 and installed the patch under W98SE.)

THe cause of the crash may be more related to the above.

I had 95 & 98 as a Multi OS ( not Dual Boot ) and had several problems when adding patches, upgrades etc. if I DID NOT do a comlete power off restart between the two.

I also had a DOS-Win3.1/95 dual boot and had WORSE problems when adding patches etc to 95.

If Dual Booting does not work properly it can cause all kinds of problems.

    Thanks BillyBob,
I guess you are right about the dualboot setup. I ran the securitypatch on another machine and this time no problems.
(The dualboot setup was a try-out, but gave me some headaches indeed when installing patches etc.)

Zephyr, are you sure you are safe?

There's a difference between supported versions of IE that are tested and found to be affected and have a patch available, and UNsupported versions of IE that don't have a patch!

MS Security Bulletin MS02-015 28 March 2002 Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer says this:

    Greeting,
Well, I am having trouble with this accumulative patch. It gives me a download of q319182.exe Running that produces an illegal operation first time. Second try tells me "a required resource cannot be found ". Third try tells me "the package is not compatible with the version of windows [win 98 se] that I am running ".

    Any ideas please?

John, note above posts. I do not think this patch applies to Win 98se.

What is your version of Internet Explorer? The system requirements for this patch are:
    Internet Explorer 6
Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2
Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1
Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 2 for Windows 2000 and NT

In other words, you need IE5.5 Sp2 IE5.5 SP1 or IE6 to install the patch on your Win98se system
