I am using win98. I have myself and my son as a user. He has his own login to windows. Somehow, and I don't know what I did, now when windows loads it goes directly into mine, instead of the window popping up asking which user and password. I went into control panel, users, and he is still listed there. Is there any way to get this back?

    here's where i'm at

ok, so now I deleted my son from the users list, and then tried adding him back on. still, when windows boots up, it goes directly into mine. the only way to get to his is for me to go to the "log off" on the start menu. I hope someone can help, I really need this feature.

Control Panel>passwords>user profiles tab and check 'users can customize', OK. Should get the logon after reboot.

In Win98, right click on Network Neighborhood and choose "Client for Microsoft Networks" in the drop-down list for Primary Network Logon type. Click OK. Reboot.

That should give you the username/password window every time you boot the computer.

Be forewarned: If someone wants to get into the computer without a password, all they have to do is click on the "Cancel" button on that logon window and it'll boot on into Windows. Win98 just isn't built for security.

ok. thank you for merging this thread. i have tried all the suggestions given so far, and still no luck. this all happened when i downloaded a program and then deleted it. afterwards, many things on my computer had changed, including window size, having to doubleclick icons instead of single click, and of course this password thing. i fixed the window size, i can live with the doubleclicking, but i do need to have my son back into his own password.

well the program i downloaded and deleted was easycleaner. this suggestion has helped "Click start, run. Type in regedit, click ok. In the registry there is going to be a entry called AutoLogon=xx
The xx is going to be a number but, all you have to do to find this, is to click edit, find next, type AutoLogon, click match whole string only and then delete the key when you find it. Restart the computer and there will be your menu."

Upon rebooting, it does take me to a screen to enter a password. but it is very different than what i had before. previously the window would have both names showing and i would highlight the name i wanted to open and then type in the password. now the name needs to be typed in and then the password. yes, i can live with this, but if anyone knows how to get it back to the other way, i'd appreciate it.

Go to the Control Panel & click open 'Network',
press the drop down menu, under 'Primary Network Logon',
choose "Microsoft family logon" & press ok,
you'll be prompt to reboot, click 'yes',
