when i start my computer, it has 2 selections to pick from and both of them are win2k pro.

i just want to know how to get rid of one of them.

it appeared once i installed win2k over itself. meaning i already had win2k on, but i installed over it again with win2k

    thanks

You can simply edit the boot.ini thats in the root of c:\ . Remove one of the entries, but be very carefull not to change any of the partition numbers or disk numbers becuase your system will become unbootable....so be VERY carefull when editing it. It might be set to read only so uncheck read only before opening it so you can save your changes.

Just means that if you chose the other boot it will go to DOS!

Harmless and may even be helpful one day if the 1st boot fails.

    leave it.

If you attempt to edit the boot.ini I would back it up 1st. And if you edit it incorrectly then the dos prompt is where you could fix it.

If you use ntfs then you could not do this but it is a place to have.

    Keep it!

Right click on "My computer "

Then go to the "Advanced tab" and click on the "Startup and Recovery Button "

There you will see a little checkbox below the OS choice. It will give you the option of how long you want to set your display time to be. If you uncheck that box it will automatically boot to whatever OS you have selected into the drop down menu above. That should clear up your problem.

I'm having a similar problem. I found the settings in the Advanced settings of My Comouter/Properties, however, I am still wondering is there a way to permanently remove the other option.
I did the same thing as the first post (inadvertantly reinstalled instead or upgrading), and have since deleted the new install.
I do not have a boot.ini in my c:/ dir (or anywhere else for that matter).
    Any suggestions?

pcallaghan - if you are running W2K and it will boot up, you absolutely do have a boot.ini file in the root of C:

The file is a hidden, read-only system file so normally you won't see it unless you change it's properties or set Windows Explorer to show you all possible files.

    A word of warning though.
Do some research on invoking the recovery console from booting from the install disk, preferably from the MS knowledge base site and also from W2K help options.
You will need to use some command line inputing so read up on the correct syntax etc, 'else you may get a little frustrated when things don't seem to work ;)

    Thanks guys,
I figured it out. I had forgotten to deselect the 'Hide protecteded operating system files' option on Explorers Folder Options. Did that and found boot.ini
    All should be cool now.

    Thanks for the help :)
