    Hello, everyone.

    I have a problem with 2 IDE HD's:
320 GB Seagate HD (Took it off of a External HD, which was having problems see this thread) (320GB free)
120 GB Samsung HD (9GB free)
Will refer to them as 320HD and 120HD, respectively.

So the 320HD was already in CS mode and the 120HD is in Master.
With this setup my PC won't boot.

Now I change the 120HD to Slave and I leave the 320HD in CS.
The PC will boot but the 120HD won't show up correctly (it will show as "Local Disk" with 31GB of space and needs to be formatted) and the 320HD will work correctly.

Now I change the 120HD to CS and I leave the 320HD to CS.
Same as before except it will show 0bytes of space.

And if I unplug the 320HD or 120HD everything is fine.

I still need to check other combinations, but just wanted to see if any of you has any idea of what might be wrong.

If it matters, my mobo only has one IDE channel and the 1st connected device is the 120HD (the other one is in the "tail end "), and I have a SATAII HD too.

    Thanks in advance.

    EDIT

Forgot something, XP is not installed in any of those IDE HDs, its in the SATA HD.

Set the drive w/ the operating system as Master and the other as Slave. Then at next boot go into the bios and make sure the OS drive is set as first IDE boot device. Note: not all bios have a setting for selecting which IDE drive should boot first, but if it does it will be listed as IDE 0, IDE 1, IDE 2, etc.

Thanks, TonyT, but i think I made it clear that the OS was installed in another HD.

Anyways, I already fixed the problem, I made the 320GB Master and the 120GB CS and they are both working fine now.

Either use master/slave settings or cable select (CS). Don't mix and match you may have problems.

If using CS the drive on the tail end is the master with the one in the middle being slave.

Some drives have different settiings for Master/Slave present or master only/single drive, if your's do make sure you take this into account.

I was once told that cable select should only be used when both drives are from the same manufacture, you have a Seagate and a Samsung.
