Hi All, need some help troubleshooting a 169 address.

I have a 50mtr cat5e cable running from my Cisco EPC2425 cable router/modem. I connect this to my ZyXEL ES-105A 8 port unmanaged switch. I have two desktops connected to the ZyXEL as well. I get the 169.xxx.xxx.xxx address, and no or limited network connectivity error on both desktops.

When I take the switch off line all is good and I get a DHCP offer from my router and I can connect. The switch does not have an uplink port & is auto sensing.

I have configured one of my desktops with a static ip, gateway & dns while using the ZyXEL with no luck. I have tried ipconfig /release /renew with no luck. This is a new switch so I'm assuming it's good.

    Any Ideas Gents???

    Thanks
    Whacker.

    Try this:
    1. Disconnect comp cat5 cables from switch, 50' run connected to port 1 on switch..
    2. Power off the Cisco.
    3. Power off the switch.
    4. Power on the Cisco & let fully sync with ISP.
    5. Power on the switch & let sync with Cisco, about 10-20 seconds.
    6. Connect 1 comp to port 2 on switch and power on comp.
    7. If no joy, try port 3, etc.
    8. If all ports fail, get a new switch.
    9. If OK, connect 2nd comp to switch & power on.

FYI, no need for uplink port anyway, uplink ports are for linking to another switch, upward and away from the source router.

Since you say the switch is new, why not get it replaced under warranty ?

Before replacing the switch, login to the router and verify that enough DHCP leases are allowed. Most router defaults set max DHCP clients to 50. Yours may be set low.

Next, verify the cables used from pcs to switch are indeed good cat5 cables.

Hi All, I've checked the DHCP assignment and there's plenty available and the cables are good.

I can claim from the seller..(e-bay) so wish me luck....

    Thanks for you help.
