Have you tried to uninstall AntiVir and reinstall it, to see if that will fix it.??
No way, laptops are nice and i have a couple,but since you have to have them plugged in all the time anyway, just use a desktop..

Did this have a C: and D: drive before you started ? D: drive should be Recovery... you should be able to just do a full recovery from D; drive...

Avast will work on Windows 98, there is not too many left that will work..
It sounds like a bad setup disk, I would try another one..
You could just right click on D: drive a format it... BUT, you will loose your recovery files.
All you needed was a program called Everest,It will identify your network card and then you just download the drivers for your make and model..
Everest will Identifier everything in your computer, I think i would try another Cd rom drive first.. Or run a cleaner disk through it...
have you scanned for Virus ? Is the line there all of the time ? you might have either a video card going bad or your monitor...
Ok, You have enough ram for Xp,but not Vista... It sounds like you need a good cleaning. Install Ccleaner, and a good regcleaner..I use Abexo...
