Right File Type not shoing in WE

In the Windows Explorer Tools > File Types the file type for the extension TIF was originally opened with 'MS Office Document Image File'. I changed it to open with Photoshop. Now when I double-click on it, Photoshop opens as expected.

However, in Windows Explorer, the file type is still shown as 'MS Office Document Image File' instead of the simple 'TIF File' to be expected. The file listing also has the "MS Doc..." icon. This is not true on another XP I have. Both are Dell systems.

    Perplexed!

If you open folder options/file types and then find the file type and select edit for that type, I belive you will find a "change icon" button on the edit page. I think this will help you out.

    Thanks for the suggestion, Phar-

but this won't work for 2 reasons: 1) changing the icon is independent of changing the linkage; 2) clicking on edit>change as you suggested doesn't allow one to change the icon. If the Extension type is the sys default type(???), then there is also an Advanced button below the change button. Clicking on the Advanced button will allow the icon to be changed. However, once the file extension has been customized (changed), the Advanced button changes to a Restore button and there is no longer an ability to change the icon. Trapped, both ways. :(

I've found that changing file associations through File Types doesn't always change the icon. Don't know why...it's a Windows thing, I guess.

However, I rarely (as in never) have experienced a problem with icons when changing the file association by holding down the shift key while right clicking on a file of the type I want to change, going to Open With, choosing the application from the list, checking the "Always open..." box and then OK.

If it's too late for that to work, the Photoshop icon is located within "photoshop.exe." Sometimes if you change one icon of the type you're working with to the correct icon, the rest will fall into line. I've found it works most reliably by right clicking on the file type, choose Properties, click Change Icon, browse to the icon you want to use (in this case, the Photoshop folder, "photoshop.exe "), choose the icon you want from those displayed (there are 45 choices displayed when I checked), click OK.

It seems like a Catch-22 situation, but it's not. Click the Restore button and it will change back to Advanced. The filetype will revert to the default, but after you change the icon, you can reset the filetype to whatever you want.

    Miz and Jim,

Thanks to you both for your responses. Miz, I like your procedure and am anxious to try it as soon as I get home to Seattle. Presently in Chicago. That may also solve the linkage problem where the system still identifies jpeg and tiff files as something else (see above) in Windows Explorer.

Jim, thanks for resolving the Catch-22 wrt editing file types.

    Have a great weekend.

    Chuck
