    Hello,
    In my, "Device Manager ", I have 2 listings for "Direct Memory Access Controler ". One "DMAC" has a yellow exclamation point (!) beside of it...the other one is ok. I have tried to remove & reload the driver but that dosn't help any...Is it unusual to have 2 listings for the same thing??...Should I just try to remove the the "DMAC" thats giving me trouble?

    J.M.:confused:

    A friend of mine says that I should remove the "DMAC" , but when I reboot , the computer reloads the device...how do I delete the extra "DMAC" , or is that the best solution??

    J. M. :)

    Try this.
    Remove both of them in Device Manager.
    Restart in Dos Mode, and type in this command at the prompt:
    scanreg /fix
    When you get the message 'windows has repaired the registry', press CTRL+ALT+DEL to reboot.

    Thanks for the help...The Device Manager is back to normal. While I was in DOS mode, I read this:
    Soundscape VIVO (TM) Initialization Driver, Version3.22.
    Copyright (c) 1995-1996,ENSONIC Corp. , All Rights Reserved
    error: Memory Manager not detected.
    Soundscape VIVO requires EMM386 or similar.
    Can you explain what this means?

    J.M.

    It seems that you have a dos driver loading in either the C:\Config.Sys file or the C:\Autoexec.bat file. In either case, windows does not need this, it has it's own drivers, that is what the Device Manager is all about.
    Go to Start\Run, type in Msconfig and press enter. When the System Configuration Utility opens, click on the Autoexec tab, uncheck any lines not relating to Norton or AVG, if you have them. You are looking for a line that starts with C:\, not sure of the file being called up.

    Click on Config.Sys tab, you really only need the line relating to Himem.Sys here, if you have a line relating to Emm386, you can leave that one. Uncheck any other 'Device=" lines.
    If unsure, post back the contents of both files.

    According to this page you need to edit your C:\Config.Sys file. You can use Notepad to do this. But this is a bit different than the page and will work better in the long run. It needs to be exactly like this;

    Device=C:\Windows\Himem.Sys
    Device=C:\Windows\Emm386.Exe Ram
    Dos=High,Umb

    What this will do is enable the Expanded Memory your sound driver is needing, and also opens up the Upper Memory Area for use by Windows. This area exists between the 640 kb and 1 mb boundaries.
    Your Autoexec file is fine blank.
    If you want to see the affects of this, before you edit C:\Config.Sys, open a dos window and type in this command;
    mem /c
    Then do it after editing and rebooting, you will see the difference.
    Have a good one.

    Thanks markp62, I copied the files & pasted them to notepad, rebooted, went back to DOS mode & the error message was gone. :)
    I need to learn more about DOS commands...Is there a web site that explains them in more detail?

    Thanks,
    J. M.

    Cool, glad to hear all is well.
    Have a look at this Google search, the first link does look good. A glance at the others may be a good idea, as there are aspects of dos that could be overlooked.
    Personally, I find I can do some things in dos much faster and easier than in windows.
