    Hi z4u

I am a user of AVG, as are all friends of mine. I think that most people who use this board also recommend this, as oppose to say, Norton Anti-Virus for example.

You say that AVG does sometimes not recognise viruses, are you keeping up to date with all updates?

I have used several different AV programs over a period of time.

I was using Norton but am now using AVG exclusively. ( still got one machine to switch over tho ) The main reason for switching was because Norton loaded the system too heavy and Norton 2003 did not behave well in XP. 2002 was fine.

But that is neither here or there.

No matter which AV software is being used there is always a chance that it will miss something. Both Norton and AVG have done that for me.

That is why we here on this BBS highly recommed also running an online scanner.

I ran Housecall ( online ) the other day and it found something in my Eudora E-mail attachments that AVG missed.

It may also depend on how the AV software is set. I myself always keep it set to check all files.

But keeping ANY AV up to date is VERY improtant. I myself being on Cable check EVERY DAY.

Do I mis-undersatnd that or were you expecting more ?

As far as AV goes you already have one of the better ones. And it is ( or has been at times ) UPDATED DAILY .

Also are you running any kind of Firewall along with the Anti-Virus Program.

To have the better protection it does require both. A Firewall gives you ( as the user ) control over what comes in and what goes out of your machine.

A lot of us here on the Board use Kerio.

    Antivirus software

With all of the various antivirus software out there, some are free, while others you have to pay for, then keep on paying year after year.AVG is indeed completely free,BUT...as with anything else, you get what you pay for.AVG is not the most dependable virus scanner out there, and may not catch every nasty virus, even with the latest update file. The update releases are somewhat haphazard, and not on a consistant basis. I tried AVG for a few months and then I installed eTrust EZ Antivirus.Etrust found 17 script viruses and others that AVG missed. The virus scanner I was using before I installed AVG was Ontrack's virus scanner as part of it's "Fix it Utilities 4.0 ".Ontrack's virus scanner is made by TrendMicro, makers of PC-Cillin antivirus.I find that McAfee's scanner is buggy and unreliable, causing trouble with other applications and programs.Norton Antivirus is too expensive, though it is rated as one of the best. But for me,ETrust EZ Antivirus is both affordable and very reliable, and uses no system resources when in real time mode.It catches all the latest virus nasties and is the fastest in terms of scanning speed-hands down.Check out a review of CA's ETrust Antivirus in this month's issue of Computer Shopper magazine.

There no AV program made that will not miss something on occasion.

TrendMicro ( Housecall online ) had caught things that both AVG AND Norton have missed At one time or another.

And as far as AVG updates go I do not believe you to be quite correct.

I have had at least 3 ( if not more ) updates within a week. I would not call the very haphazard.

Norton AV is not only expensive but it load hells out of the system and does no more than AVG. And gets its nose in a little too deep. Plus Norton can be very Norton-Windows version specific. So every time up upgrade Windows you may need to upgrade Symantec Software. It is usually backwards compatable but some times not forward compatable.

BTW. Norton may be thought to be Numero Uno but it just lost two more machines today. And all three machines are now running faster and smoother.

None of Norton products are not as good as they used to be.

I've had 3 pcs running full-time for years and only got 1 virus - the KLEZ, and that was only on 1 pc. I also have used them all (programs) and settled on AVG for all 3. If one doesn't go looking for trouble, one isn't likely to find it.
