    I am running W2K on a T30 ThinkPad -- i use Partition Magic 7.0.

When i boot up W2K after the W2K Pro screen -- i get the Disk Check for Consistency" --- it checks C and it always comes back with no problems.

I am new to W2K --- have check the disk with Norton (no problems) and tried with Partition Magic but i get a partition in use error. I have used ChKDSK at the CMD prompt (no problem).

ScanDisk doesn't seem to be included in W2K. I have check with the W2K Defrag analyzer - it gave no problems.

This all seem to occur after i updated with W2K SP4 -- however i probably have made other changes since then too.

First question is what happened to ScanDisk? Is there a replacement or is it hiding somewhere?

Second Question -- any help me find out what is set off this scan and how to turn it off is appreciated....

    thanks

    Start-run

    type

chkdsk /r (this 2k and XP scandisk)

It will tell you that it cannot do it now (open files) but will do so on next boot.

    So reboot!

Thanks for the help... atleast i know where scandisk is hiding...

i tried scandisk and results were the same no errors. the next reboot immediately did the same "consistency" check with the same results --- no errors.

W2K is a lot more "buggy" than 98SE (maybe just my experience) with a lot less control... is there anyway to turn off the chkdsk on boot?

I disargee. I deal with them all.

I have 2k at home and an XP personal workstation and 2 2k servers at work. To these servers are attached several (85) other 2K machines and many 98 machines. This is my own office but I administer over 1000 stataions in 62 other locations.

    2k is my favorite.

You might have a problem that needs correcting.

So give me the exact wording of the "consistancy check ".

Additionally go to Administrative tools Event viewer. Clear all the logs. It's OK clear them. By clearing them we will have a clean slate and when we next reboot we will see only errors that occur on boot.

Then do nothing else but shutdown and restart. Then go stright to Event viewer and at top click "Save log file as" on both Application and System, so save it load it in wordpad copy and paste it back to us.

As another test, shut down and restart in safe mode. Do you get the message here. If not do the following.

    Configure CleanMgr to max settings
    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sageset:1
The above need only be ran once (these settings will be remembered as the default until another sageset is ran).

It will present a menu select all except compress, then

    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sagerun:1
As long as /sageset above has been ran on this computer from now on the /sagerun is the only thing that needs to run.

    Registry and System cleaners
(actually download and install the below in full mode, but do not run these untill you are in safe mode

    RegCleaner http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/regcleaner.shtml
Look in first 2 cols for programs you thought you uninstalled or removed, these are the dregs left by the uninstaller. Also tag and remove any that you are POSITIVE are not supposed to be on your computer. After removing these go to the top Tools-Registry Cleanup-Do them all. Delete all it finds.

    EasyClean1.7 http://gswi.com/downloads.htm
Run only unnecessary files and registry clean delete all it finds. If you have ME or XP in the "Unnessesary Files" type the word HELP in the skip box. Do not do Duplicate files!

    RegScrubXP http://www.lexunfreeware.com/LexunFreeware.htm
    NOTE: W2K and XP only!

Select RegScrub finds problems and remove all it finds.

After all above the do a Defrag.

    Mike

PS "CONTROL" much much more in 2k.

OK!!! I do like certain things about W2K but i was very fimilar with DOS and 98SE --- i find a lot of things are "hidden" or available from other sources like the startup manager in 98SE. it is a very stable OS ---

i have converted all my 3 machines to W2K --- so it must be OK!

I cleared the System and Applications Logs as suggested ...

I restarted normally and then cleared again and restarted in SAFE mode. After the SAFE mode i decided maybe i better show you the results before proceeding with the next step...

Below is the Apps log for both startups

Dave I reccomend you get a backup ASAP!

Trying further to repair this could cause data loss.

? was this HD formated with a drive overlay like EZBIOS?

If so this is likely the problem. The next likely problem is a damaged FAT (File allocation table). And the last is a pending drive failure.

Do you have a backup facility? Drive image? Ghost?

Do you have another HD to attach, so you can copy this partition to it?

If you can, backup some way then here is what you need to do.

    Backup.

FDISK this drive then format the drive again before restoring the backup.

In any case get your documents, email, address books, favorites and any other important data off that HD. Do this before attempting further repair.

Only after backing up or saving all important data should you do the above.

There are couple of other things worth trying before resorting to fdisk/format. Only do the below if you are ready to fdisk/format.

    1. Install the 2k repair console and boot to it and type

    fixboot. Let it repair.

The above is safe as compared to the following items.

    2. Partition Magic has a very good repair facility, so if you can get it try that. Reasonablly safe.

    3. If you can get the Norton Disk Doctor it may be able to help. (this is the only Norton product I have respect for and will ever reccomend). Reasonably safe!

    4. Or let 2k itself convert this drive to NTFS. Little dangerous. It may not allow it to be converted, or it may trash the drive. So as I said be ready to FDISK/FORMAT.

    Mike,

I have backed up everything ...

I have run CHKDSK /R, CHKDSK /F, Norton Disk Doctor and actually did a DEFRAG on the hard drive. All reported no errors.

I talked to IBM --- they gave the Hitachi Drive testor which i ran on the drive --- it reports no errors also.

I am reluctant to reformat and reinstall - i have GHOST but i rather do a full re install to clean up the system.

i am suspicious --- about SP4 for W2K. This started at the same time i downloaded SP4. I noticed WinLogon.exe has been modified --- i am wondering if something has been corrupted or a bad DLL? I am also curious about Partition Magic - i used version 7 to install the partition on my drive.

    Any help appeciated....

    Hi Dave M,

Your're testing fate. Remember the first golden rule of computers, "never trust em ". Just when you're finally convinced they're your pal, they'll go and shaft you.

Consider the option of buying a new, replacement drive and keep this one as a back up. Not much money, for the sake of protecting against a potental crash. Laptop drives can get an awful bashing at times, I'm talking about short sharp knocks. The balls's in yr court.

Try backing out SP4 to put you back to SP3 where you know things were working OK.

    Just to update everyone...

    1) i tried backing out of SP4 --- that was OK but didn't solve anything.

    2) I got a external HDD for my laptop and decided to go the GHOST route. When i used ghost it failed first time - my problem not Ghost. I had use to Symantec GHReboot.exe to repair my boot record and partition table. It took a while to do but results were unexpected --- the CHKDSK problem has been eliminated ...

    3) Newt tried to help back a month ago with an excess startup time under W2K. That was resolved also.

I am a little at a loss. i suspect Partition Magic may have some do with this since i use it to partition all my disk. the interesting thing is the other 2 machines have similar setups with no problem.

iam have done a Ghost backup and now am going to re apply SP4... atleast for now i have not had to reformat my disk. it still shows no errors on Norton and hitachi disk tests.

    thanks to all

atleast i know more than i did before but am not sure what it is i know more of...

Glad things are looking up for you.

I'm not a PM user but it occurs that your version isn't recent and if you depend on it for partitioning you might have better results with PM v8.x

Actually i am using PM 8 but the HDD was partition in PM 7. i don't think there is any real difference.

Interesting - I put SP4 back on W2K and reset the partition data. sure enough the disk check reappeared and so did the long boot time. i backed out of SP4 and reset the partition data and no chkdsk and boot is short again.

i am convinced there is something with the PM partitioning data. But just incase i am backing up the critical files daily....

i am going to contact PowerQuest about PM and any incompatability with SP4 or W2K...

    thanks
    Dave M:)
