I have noticed that NS smartdownload no longer comes up when I try to download any Mozilla or Netscape updates. This is when I am using NS4.79. I reinstalled smartdownload and still I only get the windows 98 downloader. When I use Mozilla 1.4 I get the download manager. Neither gives me the option to cancel and get an option to save what has already been downloaded to resume at a later time. Does anyone know why smartdownload is no longer working? Did installing NS7.02 and Mozilla 1.4 have anything to do with it?

    Thanks,

    Marvin

Isn't Netscape Smart Download considered spyware? I remember a big deal about it a year or two ago on Steve Gibson's GRC site.

Anyway, here are the FAQS on Netscape Smart Download ..maybe you can find something helpful:

    http://wp.netscape.com/computing/download/smartdownload/ib/about.html

What is the file extension you are trying to download? If it's something other than ZIP or EXE you might need to "tell" Smart Download about it
..... for example, some Mozilla updates are "XPI" files .... I saw this in the FAQS:
    =============copy/paste======================
    17. Can I use SmartDownload for more than .EXE and .ZIP files?

.EXE and .ZIP files are the default file types downloaded by SmartDownload, however, you can set SmartDownload to launch for as many file types as you wish. Click the Advanced button and select the File Types tab. Add as many file types as you would like such as .MP3, .PDF, .DOC, .XLS, etc. (Not available for versions 1.1 and 1.2).

    Netscape Settles Software Issue
    Reuters

The version of software that was reviewed has not been distributed since the fall of 2000 to consumers, and did not adversely impact users," an AOL spokesman said in a statement about the Netscape settlement.

"The version of software that was reviewed has not been distributed since the fall of 2000 to consumers, and did not adversely impact users," an AOL spokesman said in a statement about the Netscape settlement.

The spokesman said Netscape had voluntarily taken steps to address the situation in mid to late 2000, even before being contacted by the Attorney General's office. The company shut off the tracking part of the feature shortly after it was sued.

Netscape has released several upgrades of the SmartDownload software that do not transmit profiling data back to the company and it had not associated the profiling data with names, addresses and other personally identifiable information.

Litigation is still pending on the issue in federal court, an AOL spokesman said.

Thanks for the info. uninstalled it completely and then reinstalled it and it is now working when using NS4.79. I like it because when I have long files to download it can be saved and resumed at a later date. It helps with dial up internet access.

    Hi Marv,

You originally said that reinstalling smartdownload didn't help.... I didn't think to suggest uninstalling it, THEN reinstalling... glad you thought of it!

Thank you for posting back with the solution ;)
