Am having problems; how do I get to Safe Mode when I can't view anything on my desktop? No icons, no taskbar, no arrows, nothing?

Press the CTRL button rapidly right when you see 'Starting Windows 98'.

Hitting control didn't do it, but F8 does at the beginning. So, have gotten to the Safe Mode. Still, after going back several days, to restore; still have a blank desktop. Any suggestions?

What are you trying to restore?

If you're trying to revert to an earlier registry, that needs to be done in DOS mode.

When booting up and hitting F8 select Command Prompt only.

Type: scanreg /restore and pick a date.

If on the other hand you're trying to do something else then please explain and I'm sure someone here can help.

Finally gave up and took it to the 'pc doctor'!! Let him fix it; when we rebooted, it would automatically shut down. Would not come out of Safe Mode; geez, have no idea what happened. But do thank each of you for giving me/us your suggestions.
    Thanks,
