I am trying to map a drive using a win98 bootdisk (for network installs of Win98). The folder is located on a WinXP Pro machine.
The Win98 machine, however, says that the computer name in the path does not exist when I type the command net use z: \\computername\folder.

I have NetBeui, NetBIOS, TCP/IP network services set up on the XP machine along with File and Print sharing and Client for MS Networks.

    Any suggestions?

Is this bootdisk configured to get you up on the network so that you can connect to other machines?

sorry it took so long to get back with you.

Yes it is. First it installs the .sys drivers for the network card. then it uses the net start command to start the network services, then it is suppossed to use the net use z: \\computer\folder
command to map drive z: ...but it does not see the computer. it will however find other computers on the network, those machines are using NT4 tho so it doesn't help me.

Mainly, I am trying to figure out what I need to configure on the WinXP pro machine ( network settings, protocols, services, etc.)

    Do 1 of 2 things

Use a Username and password on the 98 machine (and it must have a non blank password) that matches a user on the XP machine.

    Or

Create the user on the XP, that you are already using on the 98 machine.

    Mike

PS: EDIT, and make sure you have not used a utility like TweakUI to limit available drive letters.

EDIT #2 forget last edit as you are in dos at this point TweakuI not active yet! Lol!
