    Hi Everyone,
I have a problem with MS Word 2000. I can open and successfully save an existing doc but i can no longer save a new one or "save as" from an open document.
The message tells me it is either an invalid file name or path.
Thanks for reading this and I hope you may be able to help.
    Thanks, Chris.

"Invalid file name" can mean there's a symbol within the file name Wndows won't accept...the forward slash being the usual...and/or the file name is too long, although with a 255 character limit, that's seldom the case.

"Invalid path" often means the file is being saved to a network drive...maybe another computer on your network that isn't running, perhaps, or it's trying to save to a floppy that isn't there or is corrupted?

Office has a "detect and repair" feature. Have you tried that? Either insert the original install disk, and follow the prompts. Or click on help, detect and repair. You will need the disk, and it takes a while.

    No luck so far Guys!

Many thanks for the prompt replys- I have tried the repair idea with no success and I have also double checked the file name. I am certain I am saving to the correct drive as well! ALSO, although I can open and save an existing file, I can't re-save it with "Save As" command.

    Thanks again, Chris

    Still no luck

Thanks for the suggestion Miz, but I looked at MS KB didn't help I'm afraid.
I have tried un-installing and re-installing Office 2000 and then reinstalling Windows itself but still no joy.

I'll keep thinking and trying to solve this and thanks again for the support.
    Chris.

Since all else has failed so far, go ahead and try the old standby...find and delete a file called "normal.dot." When it gets corrupted, it creates all sorts of strange errors and problems in Word. It'll take a minute or two of your time and, who knows, it might fix the problem.

What are you trying to name the file and where are you trying to save it?

    Save Error again

I have tried various names and locations. Even if I open an existing file and try to "Save As" it refuses to accept the save.

Word becoming messed up is a result of the nimbda virus. I am not saying you have this virus but it worth checking. If you don't have virus protection do a free scan at http://housecall.antivirus.com/

    I hope this helps,

    Matthew
