    Hi All,

Been a while since I have been here and had any problems but I encounterd a problem this morning after a night of surfing the web. Last night I was surfing web and came across some really cool computer themes that I wanted to try so I d loaded and followed instructions to use them. This morning I got up and booted puter up and to my dismay I now have a new start up logo that I do not want and am not sure how to get rid of.. thats the first problem. The second problem and I feel is maybe more serious is after booting I ran my spy bot and ad ware programs and ad ware found 36 new items some of which where additons to the local hot keys. I told to quarentine then spy bot found 2 new items and told me that one could not be removed. I rebooted and let spy bot fire up and clean system before a full boot and it seemed to clean up problems. I ran my reg clean and it found no problems with reg keys. I am now finding in any givin folder (and maybe this is something i never noticed) that some of my files or folders look transparent for some reason and it doesnt look right. To add to my frustration I am now finding the imfamous BONZIBUDDY in my puter (ARGGGH) can some one please give me a bit of direction as what to do if anything
Thanks for your time and your ear! HAPPY 4TH!

And BTW I ran my AVG 6.0 and found no apparent viruses

Two problem's , seams like one and the same, though we might have to figure out how to get rid of the second before reseting the boot up screens.

"Last night I was surfing web and came across some really cool computer themes" "

You didn't mention what brought these monsters in ?
    themes by who?
    What I would TRY)
You might first replace whatever Adaware got rid of, same for SpyBot then reboot to let things sink-in,,
control panel add-remove and uninstall those schemes or themes while there look around for anything else that looks suspicious and uninstall it...
Then restart in safe mode and run SpyBot ,, restart again in safe mode and let Adaware scan also
This article describes how to start a Windows 98-based computer in Safe mode.
    regards and good 4th

To get rid of the startup screen check in the desktop theme manager in the control panel and see if you can disable it there. I know you can choose to not use the cursors, sounds, etc. Some themes add a new startup screen but you usually can choose to not use it if you don't want to.

The start-up logo your PC loads is logos.sys - most probably
in C:\Windows or if not, C:\Windows\System.
Replace it from a back-up or if no back-up, search the www for
the standard logo, download and overwrite yours.
It will be on your Win98 install disk also, but I don't know in which .cab file at the moment. Maybe you have a third party
.cab file search/extract app, they are sometimes very useful
    in situations like this.

You can also use SFC (System File Checker) to replace the logo.sys which has apparently been replaced by the one that came with the screensaver.

First do a search on the harddrive for logo.sys so you'll know where it's supposed to go.

Go to Start>Programs>Accessores>System Tools>System Information, then click on Tools, then System File Checker. Tell it you want to extract logo.sys and then tell it to look for the original in either your Win98 CD (or the restore/recovery CD that came with your computer) which you've put into the CD drive or in C:\Windows\Options\Cabs. Tell it to extract it to the folder you found in the search.

Try doing a search using logo.* as your search term. It's possible it got renamed to logo.old or logo.bak or some such thing. Using logo.* should find any file with the name logo.

FireDancer I dont have win 98 to play with but I think you can reset that by going :
Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Welcome To Windows.

Click the "Show this screen each time Windows 98 starts" check box to clear it,(or check it) and then close the Welcome To Windows 98 dialog box.

    Hi Lonny

    Lonny,

Maybe I didnt explain myself the right way, earlier I installed a few themes and started having problems with them and some reg keys... well i got that fixxed but in the proscess I inadvertantly
installed a splash screen with one, and the screen im referring to is the big splash screen on boot up that says "welcome to windows 98" then it goes to the desk top my current screen says that but is in some funky colors.. looks like a 9 year old drew them LOL and I want my origanal back but cant seem to find it or the file Logo.sys to get it back in the proper place. I hope that helps a bit.... STILL STUCK!

    Lonny!!!!

    Lonny,

I found my problem LOL the origanal screens were not backed up as they should have been read paragraph below... (slap me!) for not being thourough !!!!!!!!!

Once you have selected the pictures you want to install, click the Install button.
You will probably want to select the "Backup old Startup/Shutdown screens" option as
well, to automatically create backups of your old images. If you don't, and you don't
back them up yourself, you will have to reinstall Windows to get them back! Only one
set of screens can be backed up at any one time, so if you are changing from a second
set to a third, you should restore your original screens first.

ughhh I belive my only recourse now is to rerun windows and install back over the top to rewrite the files...
hmmm, When I origanally installed win98 i mad a directory C:\win98 to my HDD with all cab files wonder if I could just extract the files to where they need to be? might be easier and faster to reinstall win98 back over top as I belive it should not hurt anything. If you have any ideas they would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks
    FireDancer

I need a slapping too. :) I got to thinking about this and if memory serves me correctly there is no logo.sys by default. I think the way it works is if you create your own startup screen pic you'd want to name it logo.sys and put in the root of your c: drive. If logo.sys exists windows will use it automatically. If it doesn't exist it'll use the default pic provided you have the correct entry in your msdos.sys file. Don't believe the default pic is named logo.sys. It's been a while but it seems to me (if memory serves me correctly) that it's contained within a file. It's not a file itself. To have it displayed at startup, find msdos.sys (located in the root of your c drive) . It's a hidden file so if you can't find it you'll have set windows to show all files. In any explorer window click tools>folder options>view and tick the line that says show all files. Once you've found it, right click on it, choose properties and remove the read only attribute. Then open the file in notepad and look for a line that says logo=0 . If it's there change the zero to a one, close the file and then reapply the read only attribute to the file. If the line isn't there add it. In either case there should be a line in there that says logo=1 when you're finished. Once your done, reboot and see what happens.
