I have a Gateway Computer over there on the bench that`s like the girl who was a little bit pregnant,I can`t hurt it. The OS is ME and this is my first experience with that OS and I don`t think I like it.It boots up when it`s in the mood and then will shut down for no apparent reason. The CPU and power supply, and everything else for that matter, was extremely dirty when I opened the tower It`s all blown away now and I don`t think heat is the problem. Two year old system, I have all the recovery disks and formatted and reinstalled from scratch. Twice! No help. It ran the recovery disks and installation with out a hitch I should think it would have heated up while all that was going on if it was ever going to.
On one of the occasions when I did get the desktop complete and found the Win Doctor ? or whatever (in ME utilities) all the diagnoses were ok. Hard drive , Ram, CPU, etc.
My question is this. Can I format the hard drive and install Win`98 from the `98 disk, or has Gateway got some code built in that won`t allow this? It`s got a stick on tag that says designed for Win. ME.
    Thanks, as usual.

    Hey cuz,

Not a problem. You can put 98 on it. You will still have the Gateway logo on every boot because it is built into the BIOS chip.

    Thanks Bill,
I`ll do that and see if it`ll boot up consistently with `98

I tried using `98 installed over `95 using my upgrade disk after a comlete format. everything installed OK but if it`s shut down for any length of time it forgets how to boot up.Back to it`s old tricks.
I have a new battery in it. I think the computer is destined to get kissed goodby as soon as I salvage that battery.
Thanks, and I`ll se you at the reunion.
