    Hi,

I've been having to restart my computer many times after getting notices of "This program has performed an illegal operation "

Details: Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module <unknown> at 0000:b00dc120

I checked at run/msconfig to see if anything unusual was going on there, (I keep only what is necessary on my taskbar} and found "DxLoad ", (looking at "recent Support BBS Postings under "System Resources low-W98 "), I found "DxLoad (DX3D Rndr.exe)
I tried to uncheck it and restart the computer but it came right back.

Do you think this is causing my "illegal operation" notices? If so, how do I get rid of it?

    virus W32.Gibe.B@mm

    :)

    THANK YOU goddez1 and mark62!!!

I never would have suspected a virus. I have McAffee Virus Scan Online and thought that would take care of any incoming viruses.

I had to scan all the subfolders with McAffee, which took a long time before it came up with 5 infected files... W32.Gibe.B@mm, just as you told me.
    Then it cleaned them up.

I haven't been keeping the shield on the taskbar, I thought it does it's work behind the scenes. Do you think that is why it got past the "censor "?

Now I'm wondering, do I need to inform all contacts in my address book?
I'm thinking, that is probably how I got it... I don't remember opening any patches or updates from Microsoft.
Got a lot of them last year and never opened them.

    Thanx again.

    Carval

Good to hear everything turned out well
It seems not having the shield of McAffee there, your AV was not working. With the shield, it is then working in the background. Perhaps you would be interested in AVG AV for free, it works very well, and would be recommended by many on here.
A year ago it was possible to be infected by a virus just by looking at an email, but due to critical updates, most of that was nullified. Of course, it helped if you were using Outlook Express, and it is running in the Restricted Sites Zone of IE. To check for this, in OE go to Tools\Options, click on the Security tab, you will see it at the top.
If you decide to tell the people in your Address Book, they might be scared of the email when a virus is mentioned. As there are emails abound about viruses, and here is a tool for it. Turns out the tool is the virus. I know you are trying to do a good thing, but others have made people wary, but give it a try, give them the link to Housecall.
