Does anyone know how/why a .txt file gets saved as a .bak file ?
    The .txt file remains intact.
    This is Win98SE / Office 2000.
The copy to the .bak file is not started by me and seems
automatic. I do not even need to use any Office apps.
ie I can open a .txt file in NoteTab and Windows (I think)
creates a .bak file with the same name.
I do not need this to happen, but so far cannot prevent it ...
    regards

A .bak file is a backup file. Windows often creates one when the original file is open, apparently knowing about the habit Windows programs have of crashing and taking the open file with it. Hence, the backup file. ;)

    Thanks Miz !
I know they are backup files.
I just wanted to know if I could somehow prevent their creation.
    regards

I think there's an option in Word to save the document every x number of minutes. Can't remember the exact phrase but perhaps this is how they are created. I don't have Office installed anymore so I can't really be more specific as to where it's at. Try tools>options and look around in there a bit.

    Sorry, merlin...misunderstood the question.

You can turn off the backup feature in Word under Tools>Options>Save, uncheck "Always create backup copy. "

I don't have NoteTab installed. Perhaps it has a way of turning off that feature similar to Word's. Try looking under NoteTab's "Preferences" or "Options" for something to do with "auto save" or "create backup" that you can turn off.

Thanks to Miz and Zander !
(and Admin of course, that provides the basis of the dialogues
    on the Board)
"Always create backup copy" was unchecked.
"Allow background saves" was checked - so I unchecked it.
Waiting to see what happens now ...
