    Just formatted and am reloading programs on WIN98 SE. Have 3 problems to date:

    1. Windows keeps hanging up on shut down. I get the " Windows is Shutting Down" sign but it never does. I have to reboot manually.

    2. I know there is a way of getting rid of the flying window at boot-up but cannot recall procedure. Can you help?

    3. Network Neighborhood is on my desktop. Is it needed? If not how to get rid of it. If it is needed, than can I somehow get it off the desktop? Perhaps there is a way of transferring it over to Programs.

    re-installation

    Opps! Forgot to add that I did download the so-called remedy for bad shutdowns from the Windows web site. I installed it but am still having problems with lock ups at shutdown.

    To remove the Windows Logo. Go to Windows Explorer, and right click the C:\Msdos.Sys file, go to Properties, and uncheck the Read Only. Then Open With Notepad and add this line in;
    Logo=0
    If you do want want DrvSpace and DblSpace loading [disk compression utilities for the hard drive, useless with FAT32 file system];
    DrvSpace=0
    DblSpace=0
    Save.
    Use TweakUI to remove Network Neighborhood.

    Did you disable the Fast Shutdown? But I degress here, if you installed the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement, the option to disable is greyed out. But this page has some things to look at.

    If by chance you have Norton Anti-Virus loaded check it for checking Flopy at shut down.

    If that is set to check floppy it will ( or at least may ) stop Window fron shuting down.

    re-installation

    Followed your instructions and did get rid of flying windows and network neighborhood. Still getting that darn "Windows is shutting down." Would like to try your suggestion of closing off "Fast Shutdown" to see if that helps; but where do I find it?

    Chances are if you have already installed the shutdown patch, this option is already turned off/disabled=0.....but......
    Fast Shutdown Registry Key Is Enabled
    WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

    The Microsoft System Configuration utility includes an option to disable Fast Shutdown. If this option is not set in Windows 98 Second Edition, your computer may reboot instead of shutting down. To resolve this issue, change the FastReboot data value from 1 to 0 in the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Shutdown

    NOTE: After you apply the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement, the Disable Fast Shutdown option is no longer listed on the Advanced tab in Msconfig.exe.

    Reinforcement :D deffinitely worth a study-up.....
