Can anyone help me with a niggling (but not serious) problem? I am at a complete loss as to why my combination printer/scanner prints but will not scan on my windows 2000 PC. It used to work until recently.

All you get is a "scanner handler error" in Imaging.

I have reinstalled drivers etc until I am blue in the face. Even Epson admit they can do nothing more for me short of advising me to reinstall windows 2000. I am not going to do this as it still works if I plug it into my windows 2000 laptop. God knows why that works and my PC does not - they both receive the same updates at the same time. Both now have SP4 but that has made no difference.

The problem seems to be that the twain driver wont load in when instructed by another program. Now if there was some way I could force it to load, perhaps we could see what was wrong?

    Many thanks for any help.

Have you tried completely removing the device (hardware & software & registry entries), rebooting, and then doing a fresh install?

If so and that didn't fix it, try start~run~sfc /scannow (you'll need your 2K CD) and then reapply SP4 and see if you have it fixed.

I agree about not reloading the OS. I hate it when a tech gets stuck and suggests that because he/she doesn't have a clue what is wrong.

Tried fresh install including a complete registry clean with "reghealer" !

I will try that SFC thingy but should I uninstall SP4 first or just reinstall it after the SFC operation? (I downloaded the 130 mb file for ease of use).

    Thanks

    Funster

PS: Just tried the SFC route with a reinstall of SP4 afterwards and uninstall Epson before, reinstall Epson afterwards. No joy Im afraid. By the way the SFC routine out of command prompt does not actually say it has finished it's job, just returns to c prompt. I presume this is normal. It did not work at all off the start-run menu

Returning to the command prompt is normal.

And no need to remove SP4 when doing the deed. The re-apply is just a precaution in case SFC found a damaged system file and replaced it since the replacement would be from whatever SP level your original install contained.

Something that is worth doing is making your own 2K /w SP4 install CD (slipstream SP4 onto a 2K install CD). That way you'll always get the latest files with any of the repair options that use the CD.

At least with the sfc done, you can be pretty confident you are dealing with an Epson issue.

What connection for the scanner? USB, Parallel, ???

And exactly which scanner? I found quite a bit of Epson related info for the "scanner handler error" but all very model specific.

It is an Epson 2500 printer and scanner combination. USB. They do not have a parallel driver for w2k or w xp.

Funster - I am not trying to run you off but Scanner Driver Discussion Forum is an active forum with lots of scanner-specific expertise so if no luck from here, you might want to try there.

Microsoft has an article about a similar issue with the 2500 but with ME. And it is a driver issue in that case. Maybe some useful information in the write-up Here.

    EPILOGUE

For the record I searched high and low for a solution (thanks for the links Newt) but found nothing.

So here I am - spent the weekend reinstalling Windows 2000 & SP4 and my scanner now works lovely. I suppose I am a little happy that it was not a hardware fault as I have a PC jam packed full of PCI devices.

Now my other problem is that Norton Internet Security 2001 does not work properly with SP4 EVEN after installing the Norton patch that is supposed to fix it (and of course a fresh W2k installation). Go figure !

Probably the quickest (and maybe the best) fix for your NIS issues is to update. You can probably find 2002 heavily discounted somewhere and 2003 isn't expensive and I think it runs a little better - at least on XP so possibly on 2K as well.
