I bought an eMachines T2385 recently and also have an eMachines 4333i. I want to connect these two machines so that I can access files on my 433i from my T2385. Can I use a serial or paralell connection (or USB cable) between them without going to Ethernet---and if so how do I go about doing ths? My T2385 has Windows XP installed and my 433i has Windows 98 SE--thanks for your help, Marion McCaleb

    Marion,

This is the situation as I see it - don't take it as gospel :)

You can transfer files between 2 PC's using a parallel, serial or USB cables with the appropriate software like LapLink or Optronix for USB.

Windows XP has some built-in software to do this too. Go :

Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Create New Connection and select 'Set up an advanced connection', which deals with direct cable links. Follow the Wizard through.

It is my understanding that this is for transferring files from one PC to another - not for accessing and using those files from another computer. I may well be wrong on this - I use a simple network to connect my PC to my laptop.

Suggest you try this first and see if it does what you want. Be sure to check the gender of the cable before buying one - I feel sure that I have seen parallel/serial data transfer cables in PCWorld, etc.

If this does not provide the solution you require a simple network is very easy and cheap to set up - a NIC in each PC and a CAT cable plus the Win XP Networking Wizard. Works a treat S:)

DCC (direct cable connection) via serial or parallel cables is good and stable but slow and not very long on features. Does fine for the occasional file transfer though.

USB - can't speak to that first hand. But USB networking seems to cause problems and I avoid it.

Ethernet cards and cable are inexpensive, fast, and offer lots of features. Setup is pretty simple too. Very similar in many ways to the DCC setup.
