    I have a problem with my windows 98 installation.
    I had win95, but i ran fdisk and formatted the harddrive before i started with the installation progress.

    The installation succeed, but when i try to boot the computer it hangs just after it loaded/not loaded msmouse.vxd

    If I start in safe mode, I can see my harddrive twice, as c: and d: and my cd isn't there.

    In dos everything works great.

    I would guess that Windows had a hardware drama during installation. I take it that you haven't loaded very much, so why not reformat and start again.
    Check all your cables are seated properly. If Windows can't recognise the hardware it may load the wrong drivers or see them as something else.

    Well... I have tried that about seven times...

    I think it is either the cd-drive or the PCI Bus Master IDE Controller.

    If i start in safe mode and delete the divers for PCI Bus Master IDE Controller, and restart, I can start in normal mode.

    But, windows find the IDE controller and install drivers. Then if i choose to not restart, everything works fine, execept for the cd, and harddrive appears twice.

    After a restart, i can't start in normal mode.

    If i disconnect the cd, everything works fine.

    I have Intel 82371SB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
    and the cd is a Toshiba XM-6002B

    I would take out all hardware except for the video card. Especially the PCI modem, if exists. If there, these can be big problems when installing windows.
    If you opt to remove the CD, you can copy the windows setup files to the hard drive and run setup from there. The dos commands to copy the files after formatting the drive, assuming you use a boot floppy;
    c:
    md\win98
    copy X:\win98\*.* c:\win98 << X being the letter for the CD
    Reboot, without CDrom support;
    c:\win98\setup.exe
    Install windows. The first hardware driver to be installed would be for the motherboard. Add in hardware one at a time, allowing windows to detect and install drivers. I would go with CD first, as I think some of your drivers may be on CD's.

    Some things I've thought about:

    CDrom drives tend to like being set as master. You could try setting it as master on IDE channel 2 if it is not already. Check (pull and reseat) the drive data cables at the motherboard.
    Check the CD drive's manufacturer's website, usually they use standard drivers that Windows loads, but some need specific drivers. Also check there in case there is a firmware update for it.

    Mark mentioned motherboard drivers (that should have the proper IDE controller drivers). If you don't have the original CD disk that came with the the machine you will have to check in the motherboard manual for which chipset the board has, then go to the Intel website and find them. The chipset will have a model number like 440LX or i820.

    Hope this helps

    Thanks.
    It was the driver for the IDE Controller.

    I deleted it and activated DMA and now everything works great.
