I have a customer that is using WIN95 and I am having a problem with a network printer. They use a DOS based database as their main customer info program and can print to the NETRWORK printer on LPT1: with no problem. When I go to print something from MS Word or Notepad or any program and select the same printer that is used with the DOS based prog and get time out errors like the printer is off line. The printer is connected to the PC thru a central hub that connects via the serial port on the back of the PC, which is COM 1 I am guessing. Does anyone have any suggestions for me. The PC itself is not connected to a workgrouped network where it can use shared drives and such. It has me bumfuzzled.

    Thanks

    Jerry

Please let me know if you need anymore info.

Jerry without a network they can not have a network printer.

Your DOS program has been told how to reach the printer. And it is not on LPT1.

On the other hand Windows has not been told where the printer is or has been told eroneously that it is on LPT1. Which it is not, as you said it is attached to a com port (sounds like anyway).

So try this, go to the printers folder and find the printer, then properties-details. In "Print to the following port" select a com port and try a test page, if no, try the other comports or any other ports that may be there untill one prints. No need to try "File ".

EDIT: This will tell windows where the printer is, and should not effect DOS printing. DOS is printing directly to the port and using a DOS printer driver and not the windows driver.

I know it seems odd but 6 different computers are connected to the printer through a wall mounted network hub so I know there is no NETWORK "so to speak" because none of the computers can see each other BUT they all printer to one printer connected to the hub. I will try the COM port thing tomorrow. I think it will work.

Thanks for the help, again Mike

What you have is a printer sharing device.

So you may also have an unusual named device along with the printer and com ports. If so try that also.

But most likely it is on a standard com port.
