If you turn off all the bells and whistles in XP it’s not too bad.

How do you plan to go back? Full format I hope.

    Method

It is a Intel Pentium 4 with a clock speed of 1.5G's
with 246M of Ram. Not very fast, at least as fast as
it should be, probably need to clean up some stuff or something...
    seems to be quite sluggish...Thanks...

Not sure about a format unless there is an easy way to back up
the Data (alot of course). Also How would you turn off the bells and whistles? Maybe that would be worth a try.

    Go to Black Viper

Print it out. Look at the " SAFE " column and start tweaking.

    Hi, szvpvp ~

What, may I ask leads you to believe that XP is running slower than Win2K?

Win2K is great, but with what you have they would run the same.

Did you do a clean format and install from scratch? If not, therein may lie your answer. Also, turning off the bells and whistles you need not as Billy Bob directed you to will improve your performance to that of a noticeable difference when compared to Win2K.

To that part I disagree. I dumped XP Pro right on top of 98SE and NO PROBLEMS whatsoever. There were things that I did not like but no real problems.

And I saved myself MANY hours of reinstallation work.

Just make sure any Anti-Virus program is at least shutdown. Better if un-installed. ESPECIALLY SYMANTEC And I believe McAfee also.

BUT, It does depend a great deal on the condition of the previous OS. If ANY problems exist, do not try it. I myself had not problems ( or even errors ) in over six months.

But the tweaking and turning off of un-needed stuff does help A LOT.

    Hi, BillyBob ~

That's great, Bob, but you you can't disagree with a factual premise because of your one-time isolated experience that garnered a fortunate experience. :D

We are trying to resolve an issue that exists currently after said installation for szvpvp and diagnosis protocol calls for such to be the first ruled out as dirty installs are a common denominator for such symptom exhibited.

To the sound advice posted I would add :

Bang in the RAM - another 256 Mb should work wonders - your 256 - less it would seem 10 Mb for the onboard video (?) or is that a typo - is really the minimum.

    XP

I like the IDea of a "Clean Install" as I am a great Tester of S/W programs...something might have gone where it was not suppose to here. Well, I will see about the easiest methods first, possibly, removing bells and whistles, if I can find them. Then, I may add more Ram. Another 256 Dimm? Not sure what the cost would be on this...Ram prices up? or Ram prices down? or depends on where you go? Anyway I appreciate all your efforts, when I get to it...hopefully in the next few days, I will let you know results as conclusions are nice. Thanks and will be talking to you soon.....

There is no 100% for sure proof that a clean install will be better.

Yes I can leagally and honestly disagree. It is not a one time shot. I had two BAD CLEAN installs to a brand newHD before getting a good overtop one.

The BIGGEST problem that I did have ( and really I did expect it ) was getting the PROPER VIDEO drivers installed. Until that was done I had program ( not OS ) problems. And everything except one DOS program ( which I also expected ) worked like it had always been there.

Yes. XP was a little slow to begin with. But once I found and shutdown a lot of **** that was running in the background And dumping NORTON Software. it speeded up tremendously.

And Black Viper helped a lot also.

This machine ( at least the HD ) that has Wndows XP on it right now has not had a re-format or removal of existing OS before upgrading it at least THREE years. Starting out with 98FE original.

What is on this HD right now started out on two 10gigs. Went to a 30gig and then to this 60gig. Then XP dumped on top.

The only time that I do Format an HD is if it is going into someone elses' machine. And I believe you can understand why.

To that I do agree. But dirty installs can be had from a clean OR overtop install.

BTW. I just OVERTOP installed 98SE on a bad and quite corupted 98FE ( original version ) and that thing is very little less the PURRRRR-FECT.

Also I NEVER boot from the HD to install/reinstall ( clean or overtop ) an OS. I think that may make a difference also

Do not know about a reinstall of XP yet. Have not had to do the YET I will cross that bridge if and when I come to it. And if I do get to that bridge I can saftely ( I think ) say it will be due to an Operator mess up not the Operating System. At least it has been that way so far.

Everyone has posted with good suggestions here, but PeteC has found the biggest bottleneck in the system, it's lack of RAM.
Get it up to 512 meg, THEN start tweaking (blkviper etc.).
You'll notice more difference with more ram, than you ever will by going back to 2k.
