Yesterday I bought a new 80 gig hdd to replace my current 30 gig. Before I do anything I want to get this new one up and running. I tried to set it up in the following fashion ( tried being the keyword)
Primary- NTFS 10gig ---- allocated for Windows XP and other programs.
    Extended partition of 68* gig with logical drives of 20 gig ( "D" for backup/personal material ) , 20 gig ( "E" for a ~media~ drive ) , and the remaining 28 or so gig ( "F" drive contents to be determined later )
Ok, here's my problem, when I go into fdisk setup,it only recognizes the hdd as being 10812mb ( 10 gig )
any help would be greatly appreciated.
Oh, the hdd in question is a Samsung sp8004h. 80 gig 7200 rpm.
    Thanks,
    Nick

The 10GB limitation is a bit weird. Because the BIOS limitation should be 8GB.
Tells us more about your computer. Make , model of the computer or of the mobo if you know that. Age or manufactor date would help.

well, see, thats another weird thing..... my computer is a amd xp1500, ecs k7s5s mb, 512 mb of ddr, currently using a 30 gig maxtor ( was removed from computer to set up the new drive fresh, then would be reinstalled as a slave to copy my info back. ) In Bios it recognizes the hdd as being a an 80 gig ( shows 81.0 on startup), but in fdisk, it only shows up the 10 gig. I never had the first bit of trouble with Maxtor, but I'm beginning to hate Samsung .
if I boot from my XP disc, it shows the full amount, but it sets the partiton up as NTFS, but it also sets it up as a "mystery drive "... ie when I do anything to the remaining space (68304mb or something like that ), any logical drive there becomes "C" drive. I have no formal training, but I can ~usually~ get the problem fixed... if not, thats what you guys are for... thanks in advance :)

Did you use the Software that came with the HD to do the initial setup.

I did not at first and had problems.

After I did I was able to use same software to copy the old ( 30 gig ) to the new ( 60gig ) and retain the old AS IS untill I was sure XP was going to work properly on the new.

If you have the floppy that came with the hdd. Run the diagostic program. Have had the program fix problems on hdds. Also have had bad hdds right out of the Box. 3 times in fact.

    fixed

well, after downloading the utilities from Smasung, I was able to do very little except get it to format... then it hit me, dug out my ME disc, and booted from it.... hit fdisk from there, and set it all up in fat32... after that, simple matter of reboot to the XP disc, and it formatted as NTFS. Infact, I'm replying on the new drive now :)
thanks for the input guys, all were valid, and much appreciated.
