HELP! My computer hangs up on booting, it may take 2/3 resets to get it going or if no hang ups there is only half the screen showing again 2/3 resets to resolve the matter. Sometimes when on line everything just freezes up or a fatal error message.
The latest being FATAL EXCEPTION OE HAS OCCURRED AT 0167:BFF83BFC. Also the clock loses the time but is ok for a while after reboot.
Is there anyone out there that can resolve this problem please.:(

Any chance you're running ZoneAlarm? If so, try disabling it......see if it makes a difference.

    Zone Alarm is a firewall.
Sorry about that. It was a shot in the dark.

Can you give us a few system specs?

Clock all messed up? If so seeing the K6-2 cpu, replace the Bios battery. Yours will be a large overgrown watch type and for a few dollars you should be able to get it locally.
    Yours should look like this.

Hi Train, thanks for that reply, but I should have said that the clock only loses the time when the computer is switched on so the battery dose not affect this.

Easy/quick check for weak or failing battery:

To determine if the time loss is a result of a weak computer battery:

Click Start, point to Programs, and then click MS-DOS Prompt.

At the command prompt, type time, and then press ENTER.

Compare this time with the time that is reported by the clock on the taskbar.

Type exit, and then press ENTER.

If the computer's time and the time on the clock are different, the computer's battery may be too weak to keep accurate time, and it should be replaced. For information about how to replace the battery, refer to the documentation included with your computer.

    For more possibilities see:

    http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q189/7/06.asp

    ======
Have you previously done the usual steps to eliminate the possibility that you have something loading at startup/in_systray that may be throwing hissy fits.

    Blatant cutNpaste plagiarism:
"This is a known problem with Win98. The clock will gradually lose time.
This is usually caused by programs running in the background. Win98 only
checks the system clock on startup, then maintains its own time from there.
Anything that takes processor time can cause the clock to run slow. "

AND will/can cause bootup_woes, freezes and lockups.
*SideNote: Older version of Norton was known to do all of the above.

Do you have the same problem if you bootup in safemode?

How old is the PC ?
When it was booting OK before the problem arose, did you get any distorted pictures or scrambled stuff on the screen.
I am asking this since I suspect the video adapter card or it's
    drivers need renewing.
    regards

Adapter is another good possibility. Perhaps drivers, or refresh rate set to high.

Problem is so generic that an elimination of the most likely to the least will have to be done. Adapter/monitor and startups are one of the reasons why I asked if the same symptoms are reproduced even in safemode.

Don't think adapter problem would account for clock slowdown though. Perhaps while in safemode, a peek into device manager for duplicates should be done.

The motherboard is only two years old. No previous problems with scrambled screens. It is as if you pushed the viewing area half way accross the screen but is ok after rebooting.

I upgraded my display drivers and now I have lost my true colours and 256 colour settings. How do I get them back without going to my win98 disc.

Does device manager offer an explaination for video glitch? In other words.. any disabled symbols such as yellow exclamations or red x's.

Only reason for the loss is incorrect drivers or the install went badly. Try unistall/reinstall or updating drivers of adapter once again, taking care to do so using recommended instructions for your display adapter.

If that fails, websearch for older/different or previous version of drivers or if an oem perhaps a video restore is provided by the oem restore options. When updating driver via the update driver button on the display adapter, choose the option "have disk" and browse to where you know the drivers, you wish to install, are.

OK! I have solved the display problem, it was due to the driver update I did driver was taken from windows update site (NOT GOOD) I found my original driver on my motherboard backup disc. Now that this problem has gone away has anybody else come up with a fix for my original headache.

I'm giving this post a kick to the top in hopes that a fix can shared or found, providing closure for this thing.....I hate "unsolved mysteries ".

*I sure hope the words quote: "has anybody else come up with a fix ", does not mean we {merlin & myself} have out stayed our welcome.

    Hi NEILMAC,

It's been a few days since I've been able to get back to the computer and the board. How are you coming along on this? Have you found the problem?

At this point, you need to review/list the things you have done so far to shrink the number of possibilities that could be causing your current problem. This will also help others figure out which suggestions should be offered {to avoid redundancy).

Do you happen to have Nero? It is CD burning software.
You have stated the latest is "FATAL EXCEPTION OE HAS OCCURRED AT 0167:BFF83BFC ", what others have appeared?
Have you run the Internet Explorer Repair Tool?
Control Panel\Add Remove Programs, double click Internet Explorer entry, select Repair, reboot when prompted.
Have you scanned for ad/spyware with SpyBot Search & Destroy
Unfortunately for this error message, there is not one fix all. In most cases it is an incorrect version of a system file. The IE repair tool may expose this.

No help I know - I have almost exact same problem on boot-up (occassionally only) but my FE points to 0187:BFF86EBD, I heard it may be a memory issue so ran SIMMTESTER but no faults found so i've no idea what it is !!!

Have you installed any new memory lately ?? If so it could be a faulty stick or its not seated correctly.

Good luck - if you resolve it let me know,

    Mick

    Hi,

Sorry everyone and no you have not outstayed your welcome, I had a f---up with my system. I was clearing my computer of some unwanted programs with windows uninstall program and it deleted a systems file (PCI.VXD) or so I thought, what really happened is that the file was moved into another folder so my system did not recognize the file. When I found the file and restored it to the correct folder the system replyed (BAD FILE).
Then I loaded the file from a mates computer to a floppy and onto my computer. Problem! My system would not except this file because the file date was not correct (grrrrrrrrrrr). So I checked the file write of my original and the copy and found that four seperate lines were different in the original one. I rewrote these lines and loaded, BINGO it works. The downside is I still have the original fault. I'll get back soon when I have more time to work on this. THANKS

    Neil.................
