Sometimes when our users log in to Win2K Pro machines, they get an error saying 'Explorer.exe has generated errors' and no desktop is displayed. I have to do a CTRL, ALT, DEL to log them out so they can log in again. Sometimes it happens two or three times in a row but mostly only once. When they log in again, everything is fine.

This only happens on the machines with SP2 installed.

    Anyone else seen this problem?

You don't happen to have Norton CleanSweep installed do ya? Check out Q255758 for details.

If you don't have CleanSweep installed, the cause is most likely a 3rd-part application. Dr. Watson should be creating a log entry in Event Viewer. Check in there to see if there are any details as to what application(s) may be causing the problem.

    Thanks for your reply.

I don't have any norton programs installed.

The machines only have major apps like office, macromedia and adobe. Also Mcaffee virus scan.

There's nothing in the Event Viewer.

Hmm, ok well let's try this one then. You may have older version of the Shdocvw.dll file in the %SystemRoot% folder as per Q256194.

Daryl - you said "There's nothing in the Event Viewer. "

Did you mean that literally or did you mean nothing that looked significant?

I meant there is nothing that looked significant. When this error happens, it says an error log is being created. Where would this error log be?

I've discovered that I don't need to log the user off and back on again to recover from the error. I can do a CTRL, ALT, DEL, open task manager and click New Task, then enter Explorer.exe to display the desktop etc.

Run drwtsn32.exe or search for drwtsn32.log (could be in \Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\DrWatson) and open in notepad.
