Well I thought I'd give you good folks a rest with a couple of questions so I went to Microsoft's Newsgroups. What a joke. No help at all. and after you do post, you go back and hafta scan thru the "From" list cause the search function can't find my name.
    What a waste.

Anyway, here are the issues at hand:

I just last week did clean install of Win XP on my H-P
Pavilion 4533 PC. It seems to be worth all the work,
however there are a couple of things which I seem unable
    to resolve, they are:

    #1 - H-P Desk Jet 610cl printer activates each time I
boot up and ejects one sheetof paper then the error light
comes on and when I clear it anoither sheet of paper is
ejected. On these sheets of paper are the symbols "UU"
or "UUUU" effectively ruining them. How do I correct this.

#2 - My PC came with an H-P version of Microsoft Natural
PS/2 keyboard. It has. what I understand to be "Interneyt
KLeys" above the regular keyboard. With the OEM Win98SE
that came with my PC those keys all worked and could be
configured from the Keyboard functuoin on Control Page.
That function on control page no longer exists other than
to control repeat rate etc. How can I restore it to it's
    former usefulness?

H-P will not help because the drivers for these two
hardware items came with Win XP therefore they cannot
    help.
    .

#1 I can get around by powering my printer up and down independently of the PC but seems there should be a better way.

We have an old HP OfficeJet 600 print/fax/copy/scanner. There have been a few compatibility problems over the years. Mostly these were resolved by carefully and PATIENTLY searching the HP support website. It's not the easiest website to find stuff on but if you keep looking you will (usually) find what you need.

For example, we created a simple home network for our desktop computer plus an older laptop computer. The OfficeJet 600 simply would not install or work with the "networked" computer at all. Eventually, we discovered on HP's support website a note stating that OJ 600's drivers were NOT network-friendly. It said that print-only functions (no copy, no scan, no fax) were available if we installed the printer as a DeskJet 550 on the networked computer. The DeskJet 550 drivers are built-in on Win98 and later systems so it was easy to install the printer that way.

I would look again for specific WinXP-compatible drivers again at HP support or use their FAQs and/or troubleshoot screens to find a solution. Hey, maybe you just need to uninstall then re-install, who knows?!?!

    Regards

There is a site, however, their test indicates I have the most up to date driver available from either H-P or Windows.
    Thanks for the great suggestion.

    HP printer nonsense...

    RickyD2,
My old printer was an HP deskjet 870 and it did the same thing regardless of what drivers I tried with it (or OS for that matter, it was used with win98 and 2000). Every reboot it would spit out a single sheet of paper with a single upside down 'e'. It was a pain but I just had to remember to shut it off before rebooting.
Sorry... wasn't able to offer a solution :D Hope you get it straightened out.

    B

    Printer Nonsense

Thanks Mr. B - Looks like shut down printer before shut down PC and then boot PC, then printer. That seems to work for me too.

    Hi Ricky,
I had the same problem with my HP 612C printer. Searching help on the HP website came up with uninstalling the printer and then reinstalling it. This worked for me and I have had no trouble since. I went to control panel - faxes and printers to do this. Hope this helps.

There are probably missing drivers for the Keyboard. Look at HP's site for them or check the original drivers that came with the 98SE, they might be on a separate disc.

Marty525 - re-installing it worked, apparently. Thanks very much.

Now if I can just get keyboard straight, there are NO other drivers available from HP I'm sorry to say.

    For Marty525 -

With Win98SE and H-P's own installation disk, you could set your printer to "econo" mode, therefore saving mucho ink. I see no such mode with the WinXP drivers but there ids "draft" mode. Would you and/or anyone else feel this is the same, cuz everything I print comes out really dark like it was in "best" mode.

    RickyD2,
I tried draft mode and it is OK for just your personal stuff. I wouldn't use it for any official type correspondence. It does print quite a bit faster, but the print is light. So I would assume that it would save some ink.
