all day long i have been unable to access netscape newsgroups on two computers on my LAN... netscape (4.76) works okay for browsing, and messenger email client is functioning perfectly.

but when i try to access newgroups, i get a most unusual message (at least *i've* never seen it before!) that says:

    Error!
News server responded: You have no permission to talk.
    Goodbye.

my inclination is to wait it out, and perhaps tomorrow it will have healed itself. but i thought i'd better come ask the knowledgeble netscape folks (hi Ramona!) just in case.

    best regards

    :)

    Howdy Mark,

That error is usually generated if you try to access a Newsgroup for which your ISP news server does not provide. But if you have only just experienced this problem, and have been able to access the Netscape Newsgroups up until today, then surely that is not the case.....

Did you check your Newsgroup Settings for the secnews.netscape.com Newsgroups? Ensure that you have entered Port 563 in the Server Settings, and a tick beside: "Use secure connection (SSL) ". This could also prevent your being able to access the secure groups...

    Keep on truckin',

    Ramona :D

    hi Ramona

thanks for your reply. to answer your first question, this is a newsgroup that i have been accessing regularly without problems for months. all of a sudden today, no go. it's news.grc.com.

i checked the settings for secnews.netscape.com and port 563 is selected. the secure connection choice is not given, just whether or not to check for password.

    any other ideas?

    i'm stumped.

    regards

    :)

    Hi Mark,

I am ever in Netscape mode, and took it for granted that you meant the NS NG's. I just tried accessing news.grc.com newsgroups and had no problem. The Port setting is 119 for my ISP.

To check your security settings for 4.76, click on the Security tab at the top of the page.
    Click on Navigator
Enable both Security Versions (V2 & V3) under "Advanced Security (SSL) Configuration.
    I'm sure they're fine...

The error you received would point to the fact that your news server no longer gives you access to that NG? I would check with your ISP tomorrow if you are still unable to get the messages, or gain access. I'll look around more tomorrow. It's very late in my part of the country, and this auld gal is going to call it a night!

    for feed back purposes...

there was a "situation" with the grc site that i was able to get ironed out. i realize that's vague, but there's a good reason for that.

it's fixed now and that's great!

    :)
